I am playing a "classic" game with the Houston Astros, and started off in 1991. Periodically, a player will retire that I'm really not ready to. Well, that's where the "unretire" button comes into play, right? Of course!

Only issue...occasionally what will happen is that the player will be replaced by a "--" and ...is gone forever. All the career stats, everything. Searching for the player, or even the dashes, doesn't work. What sucks is that most of the time I hit unretire just so I can look at the career graphs...this last time it happened to Frank Thomas at the age of 30, so naturally I wanted to see what happened (like, an injury or something). So much for that...

I attached the screenshot to this post.

Ask the fishes. When we tell a player to retire, he's supposed to stay retired, know what I mean?

I would assume the players that "disappeared" didn't play in a MLB game, and thus are done away with after they retire

Uhhh...it was Frank Thomas, and it happened in 1999. He had played in a lot of games by then.

Just trying to figure out what happened, and why it seems to happen randomly.

Check under Tools>Options whether 'Save Retired Players' (In the middle of the dialog) is set to 'Hall of Fame Players' or 'Major League Players'.

If its set to 'Hall of Fame Platers', then only the players who are elected to the hall of fame are saved upon retirement, and the rest disappear.

It appears as though they "disappear" upon him using the Unretire function. Is this correct?

Yah, he said he used it and then the player would be replaced with a '--" and ...is gone forever.

That is correct. Definitely not just HOF-bound players, as Rob Deer successfully unretired. It just seems to be incredibly random.

Unretire button problem. I call it.

Yeah, it's definitely a problem. When I output the stats to the "encyclopedia", all the career stats for the deleted players are gone...it's like they were removed from code.
