I've determined that the strangest rival in all sports is the rivalry between the Cardinals and the Cubs. Sure, the way they linked after the passing of Darryl Kile could have united even the bitterest of fans of the Yankees and the Red Sox, but it's been strange before that fateful day. Listen to this.
Here's case number one: I like the Cubs. Never met anybody else who likes a different rival. Mike Shannon, the voice of the Cardinals on KMOX Radio in St. Louis put it best when he said, "The Cardinals and the Cubs are a fun rivalry. A Cardinals fan and a Cubs fan will go to a ballgame, and then afterwards they will go out for dinner." You'd think the rivalry had just sprung up after some intenseness after a single playoff series, but this rivalry is OLD. Back in the very early 1900's, the Cardinals and the Cubs were as west as two baseball clubs were. You would think there would be regional indifferences, but far from it.
Chicago and St. Louis are both teams with rich heritage, St. Louis being champions of the World more, and the Cubs being the champions of the Cardinals more. Anybody else, particularly a Cubs fan, think this is a rather bizzare rivalry? It's not a bad rivalry, but it stands out like no other I have ever seen.
