A nice - albeit somewhat complicated - enhancement to the salary feature would be to allow a contract to have varying amounts per year. This might allow you to pay an up and coming prospect 1 pt per year for two years and then 5 pts per year for the next three years.
Yes, you could argue that this could be handled through two separate contracts, but it would allow you to lock in a player at one time. This puts a little risk on the player (he may be worth more by the end of the contract) and on the team (the player may get hurt, not live up to expectations...) and is much more like reality than a flat per year salary for the life of the contract.
