I'm in the process of chugging stats to create an updated database. The attached file should accomplish the following things:

1) Incorporate your new roster lists (thanks again).
2) Display seasonal stats through 2001.
3) Fix the bug with players being shown on the wrong team in their scouting reports.

To install it, unzip and copy over your existing Universe.dat file.

I am already aware of several major problems, including:

1) No Games Played data. This also means some players (like Troy Brown) are under-rated (because I have to base ratings on yards per YEAR played, not yards per GAME).

2) No Offensive Linemen ratings.

3) No Predicted stats for Rookies.

4) Some other anomalies, like seriously reduced Field Goals.

In any case, let me know about general issues you find with this database (or more detail regarding the above issues), and I'll keep posting updates to this and the new EXE.

Thanks!

Clay

noticed that rod woodson is listed with the cowboys. he in fact is with the raiders this year. DARREN woodson is on the cowboys, and he is listed correctly.

Ummh, well every team seems to have a payroll in the billions of dollars.

That might be a bit of a problem, but it looks good otherwise.

And everyone is a rookie also.

I noticed the rookie thing too. Everyone is a rook in the .dat fix.

I take Cincinnati quite often. I was surprised to see Matt Schoebel as the starting TE on the new lists (I thought Sean Brewer was winning the job this year)... so I clicked on him.

Boy look at the cap impact this kid makes. For a $209,000 salary, his bonus must be f'n crazy.

I think the salary numbers need a bit of fixing...

Attached a new database with revised salary numbers (GUESSED by the AI based on age and talent).

As you'll see from the Import Stats thread (http://forum.sportsmogul.com/showthread.php3?s=&threadid=20873), the code will be able to import contract data, assuming we can track down the following info for every player:

- Contract length
- Average salary
- Signing bonus
- Years remaining in contract

I'm also looking for feedback regarding player projections. This database creates player projections based on career averages, but in many cases this creates inaccurate numbers. We also need to flesh out the ratings for Offensive Linemen.

A few things...first off, are we going to have a database work on the players like we did in baseball? Becasue i really think that would help. Just looking at the Broncos:
Terrell Davis is no longer on the team (retired)
Clinton Portis is going to be a huge part of the offense (But is nothing in FBM)
Same with Lelie
Ed Mccaffrey is said to be a horrible receiver by FBM. The scouts ask why he is still on the team.
Same with Rod Smith.

Maybe this will be corrected with career stats input, but i really think these teams need to be done by a person rather than just based on career stats.

Also, is there a Peak age and stuff like in Baseball Mogul? I think that would be a key addition! It is one of the best randomizing tools in baseball mogul. It also allows some rookies to develop real well and some not to.

I hardly think any scouts are wondering why Ed McCaffrey or Rod Smith are with the Broncos, and better yet I think most if not all of the NFL clubs would love to have them on their teams. That's a ridiculous statement.

Jeremy Shockey (rookie for the NYG) is mistakenly placed on the Jets. Could this be a mixup between the team code for giants and jets? Also his scouting report is woeful -- he is the next Tony Gonzalez and his ratings are awful.

In fact, all NYJ rookies have been swapped with all NYG rookies. I hope that was not my mistake ... I put NYG before NYJ (alphabetically). Surprisingly, the same thing doesn't happen with SEA and SF. This is despite the fact that in the team codes given by Clay, they were inexplicably swapped, as opposed to being in straight alphabetical order.

Davis has not officialy retired yet, he's just on the IR. http://espn.go.com/nfl/news/2002/0820/1420727.html

Portis **may be** a huge part of the offense. Olandis Gary still has the starting job although the rotation and Shanahan's systems will probably favor Portis once he learns them completely.

Lelie is not going to be a huge part of that offense (unless either Smith/McCaffrey/Sharpe get hurt). Shannhan runs mainly 2 back formations and Lelie isn't going to push Sharpe out of too many plays. He could be a nice 3rd down and long passing situation addition but won't be a huge part of that system this year.

The only team codes (and thus rookies) 'swapped' were for NYJ/NYG -- I checked the rest of the teams rookies on the debug-version of fbm2003.
Hope that helps.

What i SHOULD have said about Lelie is that he is way underrated in FBM and on many teams would be getting a lot of playing time. Yes, there are Rod Smith and Mccaffrey ahead of him, but he should still be rated as one of the top rookies.

I'll take a chunk of the blame. Should have put the teams alphabetically. I've fixed this in the stats, and should have a new DB with correct Games Played up tomorrow which will chip away at some of these ratings issues.

I've also added an option to use team abbreviations (e.g. NYG) instead of numbers for the player and stat files, to avoid further confusion along this line.

Thanks, Clay .. it was partially my fault. It is easier to spot mistakes while preparing the excel file if one can easily see the team abbreviation anyway....

What about ratings for rookies? I suppose that will be the most hands-on? For general ratings, I suppose it would probably best to look at career averages, then three-year and finally last year averages.

The current Import Stats code supports player projections by interpreting ANY stat line with a blank 'Team' entry as a projection. So to really get this DB right, we need to divvy up the players (probably by position -- that way each volunteer gets a file), and then have folks enter projections for 2002-2003.

well, if you're gonna start divvying up players, i'll put my name in the hat. are you gonna divided by position tho? i think it would be better to divide by team. that way, we can focus on the teams that we know and follow religiously. although, some of those ratings could be biased. maybe we could cross reference them? like, one guy can do dallas, another washington. then when they're done, they can trade and the other guy can see if the ratings were done unbiasedly. whadda ya think?

It would be better to do it by position so that ratings are uniform and comparable. For instance, if you are doing the Saints, you have to assign ratings to Deuce McAllister in a vacuum. If you do it by RB, you can first assign the ratings to the 'gold standard' (Marshall Faulk), then go down from there based on stats and personal knowledge and projection of progression. I see your point on teams though. The idea to cross-reference is also very good -- perhaps average the ratings.

yea, actually that does sound better. by position is a good idea. didn't think it through before i started posting.

so how about like 2-3 guys per position, then take the average of the three? maybe switch them with guys who are doing another position to cross reference them. that way, running backs don't out balance wide receivers, or o linemen are not super blockers or what not.

come to think of it, how would you determine an offensive linemans ratings? that'd be kinda hard. i mean, how would you know how good he is at pass blocking as opposed to run blocking? you could take the team stats on rushing and how many time the quarterback was sacked and get a raw number from that, but sometimes, 5 so-so OLs are better than 1 super OL and 4 crappy OLs so stats may be distorted. ya know? or am i just not making sense?

i, personally, do not wanna rate OLs! that seems **** hard. but i'm up for anything else clay.

Attached is a new version of the database AND a new version of the game (2.1.4.0).

I believe the Import Stats function STILL crashes. We're working on it.

Should have a new full version up on Monday.

Best,

I downloaded and installed the lastest version 2.1.4 and the accompanying database. A major issue is that I cannot precede to the second season.

After the end of the first and resiging free agents, it asks if you want to go to the draft and then proceeds to begin the set up. It then locks up (I attempted this three times with three different teams.)

I am running XP home.

Thanks for the update. I'm working on 2.15 and will post it as soon as I can. Hopefully tonight or tomorrow (Friday).
