View Full Version : Criteria for Awards?

I am curious about what criteria is taken into account for the end of season awards???
In Hourly League 123 I managed the Oakland Athletics. Todd Ritchie went 20-5 2.91 ERA, but lost the "Pitcher of the Year" award to Pedro Martinez of Boston with a 15-9 2.40 ERA record for the season. Boston finished 35 games out of first while I won the West. I realize the West is a weaker division (weakest?), but I find this choice rather strange... I have the "we wuz robbed" thought going through my mind!
How could Martinez be considered more "valuable" than Ritchie as far as the outcome of this one particular season? Without Ritchie I would have probably finished ten games out of first place. I know the awards are basically meaningless, but I am still curious as to how they are determined.
Any thoughts or comments... ;-)

Pitcher of the Year is not MVP. As you said, Pedro had a lower ERA than Ritchie, plus he probably had more strikeouts, and better stats in other pitching statistics.

Manny Ramirez:
152 Games
204 Hits
47 Doubles
4 Triples
47 Homers
172 RBI
160 Runs
.340 Avg
.466 OBP
.670 Slug
133 Walks
147 Strikeouts
2 Stolen Bases
5 Errors
Barry Bonds:
155 Games
199 Hits
43 Doubles
4 Triples
59 Homers
177 RBI
159 Runs
.336 Avg.
.473 OBP
.721 Slug
152 Walks
86 Strikeouts
25 Stolen Bases
7 Errors
Not much of an Example but Manny Won the MVP over Barry.
They were both on my team so that takes away the which team was better ,wutever, factor.
Well Im just writing this b/c You know how you can just notice one guy is contributing every game and making a difference while the other guys arn't so noticeable. Well Barry Was That Guy No Doubt. I dunno how Manny got those numbers cuz I dunt remember seeing em' in the Boxscores but I definately thought Barry wouldve Won MVP and In My Opinion he had Slightly better numbers especially in Homers and Stolen bases.
Theres no point in my reply except that I think the awards are kinda random.
In another League I got the MVP for Nomar and he only had like a .320 Avg. 30 Homers and 120 RBI
while the league leader's numbers were like out of this world something like 70 hrs and 160-80 Rbi.
I have had rookies that have pitched 75+ inns had 30 + saves an a ERA under 3 an not one the ROY , only to lose out to someone that played 3 games an had a HR. While irritating, it is no big deal. Other then bragging rights. This is something I would like to see fixed myself, but it is far from the top of the list of "must get toos"

My favorite was a ROY who was my BACKUP third baseman. He was only used in about 20 games, had about 70 at bats, and hit below .300.

Maybe the press has a thing against Barry Bonds in the game too lol

I have seen some weird choices for ROY as well.
One season my father had a pitcher we both thought would win ROY..happens one of mine did, a guy who pitched 3 innings for my team. The next season the same thing happened only in reverse. My rookie pitcher did win POY but he had a backup OF who won ROY with only 40 ab. At least he hit around .400 but I think he didn't have the AB to qualify. I have noticed this in the CD version of the game as well. ZHopefully will be fixed but is not as important as computer AI in my opinion.
