Semifinals Team Selection

We are currently creating two new Semifinals leagues for Mogul Challenge. Here is the procedure for choosing your new team:

On Tuesday, September 10, we will open the league for you to choose your team. You will be given a 10 minute time slot when you can have your pick of teams, based on your standings in the Challenge leagues.

We have shuffled the 3 leagues together, so you are with an even balance of players from each of the original Challenge leagues. However, we have not compared the mogul points ratings between leagues, so it goes somewhat like this:
Semifinals 1
First Pick: #1 Ranked Team from MC 1
Second Pick: #1 Ranked Team from MC 3
Third Pick: #2 Ranked Team from MC 2

Semifinals 2
First Pick: #1 Ranked Team from MC 2
Second Pick: #2 Ranked Team from MC 1
Third Pick: #2 Ranked Team from MC 3

The first pick will begin Tuesday at 7:00 PM, Eastern Time. Please self-police the picking of the teams, as we will not be able to watch the entire team selection to make sure no one picks early.

If you miss your specified time, you can choose your team at any time AFTER your specified time.

A few notes...
Strangely enough, Mogul Challenge 1 only had 18 teams who qualified for the Semi-Finals, because the rest were either in debt, owned 2 teams in 2 challenge leagues, or were CPU controlled. Therefore, we selected 21 managers to move on from Mogul Challenge 2 and 3.

Please note the leagues have not been set up yet. When they are set up, I'll post with a password for you to view the league.

What happens if you miss your spot?

Personally, I don't know whether I'll have access to the computer at that time because of work, so the chances are probably 50/50 I'll have to miss my slot whenever it occurs. Do I just get to pick as soon as I can after my slot or would I have to wait till the end if I miss it.

1) The email message above says drafting begins at 2:00pm EST, but the hyperlink pointing to the drafting schedule shows the first teams drafting at 1:00pm. Which is correct?

2) The drafting schedule has both columns labelled Challenge Semi-Finals 1 . Can we assume the second column is Challenge Semi-Finals 2?

Instead of this confusing picking ****. How about this? you post all the teams and players on the teams. Than everyone gets to rank the teams they would like. 1st place team of course gets there team, If the 2nd chose the same team the 1st one did than it gets the team they ranked #2, Etc. This time slot is ludicrous as some people have to work Monday and won't be back till 9 and by the time they're back all the good teams will be gone.

I don't think Metsquad was suggesting the same sort of thing as in FDL. I think what he meant (I apologize if I'm mistaken) is that you allow people to see the rosters and then email you their ranking of the teams. For example, I want NYA first, then FLA, etc. through all 30 teams.

Then you go in order of the draft schedule you already have determined and pick the highest team on their list. If you want to, put a time limit of one day on the creation of the lists. The whole process can be done by Tuesday. I agree this would be more fair to the people who might have conflicts on Monday (self-interest alert). I also understand your point that this might take some extra work on your part (although I think it would be minimal).

We all appreciate the effort you're putting into this, and we're just trying to provide suggestions to make the whole experience better.

It's not my decision; this is the way Sports Mogul wants it done.

Here's the problem, and why your idea will not work: We cannot place a GM in a specific league. So if the deadline for emailing me is Tuesday, and I need a full day to figure out who gets what team, then that brings me to Wednesday night. Then, I have to give about 3 days for people to join with their team that they picked. Once that happens, I need to give 3 more days for anyone to join that didn't send me an email.

The league wouldn't start for another 2 weeks, probably.

I find it ridiculous that everyone is making such a big deal of picking their team; it really doesn't matter. Most of the teams are equal, and if you really want your choice, make your time on Monday!

In My Opinion
You can file this under "for what it's worth"... I think all teams will have significant weaknesses. The teams that do best will be the teams that can plug these weaknesses either through trading or through free agent selections. :rolleyes:

but youre doing such a great job. and i believe that everyone involved in the challenge honestly respects the effort youre putting in to making our game the most fair and fun it can be.

sportsmogul should start paying you.
or at least they can write one **** of a recommendation when youre checking out colleges or looking for a job.

anyways, i think the selection process for teams is fair. yes, not all of us can get to the computer at our specified time slot, but who gives a rats a$$. all the teams are equalized anyway!

people, all we're basically picking is what city you want to be from.

here's a query that just came to mind though:

the players on the teams are real or cpu generated? will it just be like picking teams in the 1st round of mogul? because i hope that players wont develop or flop just like they did in the first round. i mean, i know there are sure things like vlad, a-rod, big unit, mariano rivera, manny ramirez, sosa, giambi, etc.
but i recall in mogul challenge 1, derek lowe sucked, as did eric gagne and josh beckett. i just hope results arent predictable.

i almost want a whole new database used. basically, the question is: is the variability enough so that no one can just cruise to victory by picking a team with a bunch of future superstars who will come into their own in 2 years?

Tom, just wanted to say that the solution chosen by Sports Mogul for picking the teams is an excellent one and far simpler than any system I was able to devise.

The only problem I can see which is a minor one and that is the time chosen to allow managers to select their team. It looks like most people would have preferred that team selections were made later in the day but I suspect Sports Mogul felt this was the best time to pick teams all things being considered.

Keep up the good work. Thanks for all your time and effort. It is greatly appreciated.

P.S. I can see one real advantage for teams picking in mid to late rounds. These managers can avoid playing in the same leagues and divisions as the top finishing players in the first round. Just make yourself a list of the top ten finishers of the first round who will pick in the first five time slots for the semi-finals and try to avoid playing in a league or a division with too many of these players. I know it's something I will try to avoid as much as I possibly can even though some of these guys are friends of mine!

In addition, I have corrected the web page so you know which leauge you are in. (effective 8 PM eastern tonight)

I just reshuffled and drafted the team rosters; I tried to balance them out salary-wise...the payrolls range from 370-415. It's a little wider of a margin than the original leagues, but you are the top tier of GM's in BBMO, so you should be able to handle it :)

let me start by saying your a doing a great job and i'm sure pulling out a few hairs trying to please everyone..........but personally i agree with dturkenk as on monday i'm in school till 1 then i gotta go to work til midnite.......so i'm not going to be able to pick a team til bout tuesday morning..........and i'm sure other people must be in the same boat.......

The league info is pinned in the very first thread. I don't think a link is posted, but the league names are Challenge Semifinals 1 and Challenge Semifinals 2. You have to search for then in the join new league area.
