My closer just pitched 3 innings in a game I was losing by 4 runs when he entered the game. I think it would be more useful if he pitched in games I was winning by a narrow margine. Now he needs 3 days of rest when I could really use him.
Last time I saw a closer pitch 3 innings was Jose Mesa for the Cleveland Indians in a playoff game against the Braves.
I think a closer should only enter the game in a few situations.
1. closers team is winning by 1-4 runs going into the 9th inning.
2. closers team is winning by 1-2 runs going into the 8th inning only in an important game(division rival, playoff implications, postseason game).
3. game is tied and closers team is at home going into the top of the 9th inning.
4. extra inning game use whatever pitchers you need.
Just some thoughts...
