View Full Version : Running the key to winning?

I've really got to stop listening to WEEI (the local sports radio station).

Right now I'm listening to them go through a list of the top 10 running teams and the top 10 passing teams, so far in the 2002-2003 season.

They have noticed that 8 of the top 10 running teams are "good teams" (i.e. have winning records) but only 5 of the top 10 passing teams are "good teams".

They also noticed that the top 6 teams in DEFENDING the run (defined by fewest rush yards allowed) are "good teams".

And they are using this to "prove" that the Patriots need to run more in order to win.

Argh! Winning teams have more rush yards because they tend to get ahead early in the game and then call more rush plays to eat up the clock. They also have better "rush defense" because their opponents are forced to throw the ball in order to catch up without eating up the clock.

At the least, they should be looking at "yards per rush" to make this point.
