Recently, the leagues have added a popup ad. Please stop it. It is very annoying.

It appears when a certain ad shows up on the top of the page. The popup window has the word Wizard in the title. I'll get more info and post it.

It's a Wizards of the Coast ad for something called NFL Showdown I beleive, and I've had it pop up something like 20 times today.

This site doesn't make money from Clay wiping his butt, get realistic

I am realistic. I look at the ads at the top of the screen, and have clicked on a few that interest me. When the popup window appears, the same ad is at the top of the screen. If I was interested, I would click on it. I see nothing wrong with advertising, in fact I welcome it. But popup ads are insulting to people who subscribe to this site, and judging by the consumer friendly business practices of this site, I don't believe Clay and the crew were aware that this was happening. I would be shocked to find out that they agreed to popup ads.

I authorized the popup ads. They offered us significantly more money than the banner ads. Of course, it's very easy to offer us "significantly more" than "almost nothing".

There will definitely be no popup ads for paid subscribers. But since the game is currently free, I wanted to accept the popup ads and measure the backlash. So thanks for the response.

BTW, the ads are only supposed to popup once per "session" but we're still sure how the session is getting measured. The only way to fix these problems is to run the popups and work out the the bugs.

Thanks for your patience,

Clay

Thanks for the reponse, Clay. The funny thing about popup ads is that many people will ignore the advertiser because of the popup ad. I was intregued by the ad, but I will NEVER follow it because of the method of presentation. Well, at least there won't be any in the pay version, and the computer community can take almost anything as long as it is beta...or Microsoft;)

Just to give you an idea of how much of a money issue it is here...per 1,000 impressions of a pop-up, you get usually $3-$5. The regular banner ads are either cost per click, which is generally $.10 to $.20 per click, or per 1,000 impressions, which can be in the $1-$2 range.

Hi, Guys -

I'll throw in 2 more cents.

We have turned down FAR more pop-up ads than we have accepted. Most of them because they were not relevant, or just too annoying. We felt that the current campaign was relevant enough that it might interest some people. And because it is only supposed to appear once per session, it is nowhere near as annoying as the X-10 ads which seem to appear every single page view.

As to the alternative, don't forget that the pay-per-click ads ONLY pay us if someone (i.e. YOU, the players) click the ads! So if you click the banners occasionally you will be doing us a big favor (and helping to keep us in business :) ).

We are currently working on how to set up pop-ups so that they come up occasionally when you are playing in the free test of the game. But we do not expect to have them in the pay version -- it's one of the perks of subscribing.

Thanks for your support,
James Grove

BBM -

As part of our arrangement with Burst Media we are not permitted to discuss our ad rates.

But the rates we get are consistent with industry averages.

Hey, James?

Is Burst supplying the Pop-Up ads along with the banners? I've been looking for someone to provide pop-up impressions on some sites I have on the web.

Yes, Burst does all our ad serving.

If we have extra unsold impressions, we allocate them to LinkExchange to get a bit more traffic.

The pop-ups are served alongside a related banner or cube ad.

Burst offers pop-ups as a Run-of-Service option. We have not been accepting those; we have only accepted some pop-ups that were specifically purchased on our site, and only ones that we thought seemed relevant.

But, of course, your site has to be accepted by Burst before you can use them.

Good luck!
