Resigning Players

Why did a year get taken off of resigning players. Before it was 7 years max, now it is only 6 years. Just wondering the reasoning for this. I prefer the 7 years more, but I might be the only one.

Actually I'd like to sign some guys for even longer periods than the 7... the Rangers signed A-Rod to a 10-year deal, why can't we?
