I'd like to be in this league, especially as I work to make it easier to run these kinds of leagues.
I also think I can get the "Equalize Cities" feature working soon (i.e. before November 21st).
I'm thinking that because of the great advantage of 1st round picks, you might want to run something similar to, but not the same as a snake draft, where the order is reversed for every round after the first.
Such a draft for four teams would look like this:
1,2,3,4, 4,3,2,1 4,3,2,1 4,3,2,1 4,3,2,1 etc.
This way the team that gets the last pick in the 1st round doesn't get too badly screwed.
Also, how do you plan to physically conduct the draft? Will we send in lists? Go to a chat room?

Thanks for expressing interest in the league. It would be great to have you in the league, especially if you are trying to work to
make this type of league a little less complicated to do.
We will be drafting on AIM(I hope) if not I'll have to find a chat room somewhere. It seems that most people are available in the evening after 5:00pm EST so it would be an evening draft. No set time or date, But I would really like to be able to equalize cities for this, so maybe we'll wait until then. Also I would like to fill the league, so waiting might not be such a bad Idea.
As for draft order, It is going to be a snake draft.
Any idea what team you would like?
I also would be very interested in your opinion on rule #1(see above), and how small markets might be effected at the end of year, as I have not been able to sim a season and don't know how it will play out with everyone up for a contract extension.Feel free to e-mail me, or if you AIM my username is jsbadger7. Thanks.

Allright, we have Clay on board. My understanding was that the draft would happen on either a messanger or a chat program. We probably should have some way to keep track of who was picked for all to see (I have bad memories of some fantasy drafts where the same player ended up on two teams).
Would there be any way to have a web interface on this site for this? It would be a way to test it in case other new leagues want to use this system.
Also it might be a good idea to have a printable version of the player names by position so we can cross off picked players, wite in our own rankings by position etc. (no scouting reports on there but just the names)

Depending on when we're doing the draft, I could throw something very basic together that would just keep a list on screen of who's been picked, to augment running the draft in mirc or some other chat program...
although I'm sure it would be easier for someone who has a tie-in to the db to do (hint, hint :) )

Put me down for STL, MIN, or CHN (in the order of preference).
Clay's model for a draft order works well, I've used it in every draft league I've been in.

because your salaries are going to be so low, at least in the beginning...you are also going to have fewer players available on each roster, i'm not sure how many are available on each roster now, but i know it's many more than 30. I really like the idea, but as of now i have the bronze accoount and i like the league i'm in now. I would like to try it out though. Anyway as far as drafting the players couldn't you use the cd rom version of the game somehow to see what players are still available? I don't know if that's possible, maybe you could release all the players to free agency. Also as far as the contracts couldn't you just leave the contracts as they are set at in the beginning(default setting), that would add stategy to the draft allowing teams to chose players with longterm contracts, but cheap or longterm and expensive. Just some thoughts. I may like to join, but woould have to quit the other league i'm in and i don't think i want to do that right now...

As far as a "franchise rule" goes, perhaps one could allow teams to extend contracts by the ranking of their tier plus one. Tier Five gets to extend a persons contract up six years, Tier Four up to five, Tier Three up to four and so on. This would have to be limited to once every four or five years to prevent abuse.
Then comes the question: at what amount of pnts are they extended by? I might have the answer to that as well - LOL. The lowest amount they're asking for in Free Agency. Here's how the whole thing might work.
During the season an owner announces up to three players that he's going to seek a "Franchise Tag" on. Their contracts are up at the end of the season so they're all eligible to look at. When they hit Free Agency, he checks to see what contracts they're asking.
Tier Four team CIN declares that he's going to seek Tagging Joey Cape and Frank Robbins. He doesn't use his third choice as there's no one else on his team going to FA worth bothering about.
25 year old SP Joey Cape is asking...
:24 for 1
:25 for 2
:26 for 3
:28 for 4
:32 for 5
:33 for 6
:34 for 7
He could lock up Joey Cape for 24 pnts, up to five years.
34 year old CA Frank Robbins is asking...
:12 for 1
:11 for 2
:10 for 3
:10 for 4
:8 for 5
:6 for 6
:4 for 7
He could lock up Frank Robbins for 4 pnts, up to five years.
Now if he wanted that good b-up catcher on the cheap for a couple years he could grab Robbins at 4 pnts for two years. But he knows he needs pitching so he instead locks up Joey at 24 for five years.
Now, since he's used his Tag, he can't use it again for four years. Or five, or whatever.
If neither choice was to his liking, he could abstain from tagging anyone, and try again next year.
Of course, somebody would have to record the prices before the first FA sim - LOL. We wouldn't want someone waiting for the price to fall even further...
Then again, that might work. If he calls "TAG!" on a player and that player already is in the green with someone else ... He has wasted his Tag and has to wait five (or four, or whatever) years until he can try again.
*shrug* Ahhhh well, just ideas to bandy about.
And of course I've always liked the idea of a check box for a No Trade/No Cut contract that would have the player sign for 10% less (rounded up). This could be indicated by a "*" or "!" somewhere on the Scouting Report. Then again, I'm insane. :D

If we are going to have equalized cities then I don't think that the franchise player should have a tier restriction. Either no franchise player or the same rules for all teams.

With Equalize cities option, I'm not going to have a franchise player rule. The purpose of the rule was to help small markets compete in the first couple of years. Now with there being no small market, I see no reason to keep the rule.Thank God too, as it was more of a hassle then it was worth.
major bump!!!
Two words for anyone who's sick of being stuck with contracts they would never sign.
