I will let RC2 update you all as to the progress when he gets the chance....Things are looking to speed up here pretty soon as he has found a few shortcuts to speed up the prospect ratings...

We're doing pretty well. I'm "guessing" that we'll have the first release ready by around Aug 4th at the latest. That first release will include:

1) All prospects added to the game
2) All rosters updated (transactions, injuries, etc)
3) Hitting prospects rated
4) Cities.txt file updated (Thanks to Crispy)
5) Stadiums info updated (Thanks to Jeff Olson)

I'll still need to go back and rate the pitchers, but this will allow you all to sim some seasons and see what kind of anomolies (sp?) you find with ratings and what not. I also need to go back through and evaluate all existing player ratings, which shouldn't be that difficult.

This time frame should allow us to get all hitters done, test the universe some and then get you all a copy. It's not a complete copy, but while you all are playing your seasons, I'll have been working on the pitching prospects and hopefully have them done.

Thanks to everyone for being patient. I know this is taking a while, but part of that's because I'm anal-retentive and Scorey's got OCD :p Also, it's because the prospects are not easy to evaluate (relative to major leaguers) and it's been a learning experience to get the stats to peak where we'd like. A lot of other things have taken up time, but I'll leave it at that. Thanks again.

An update for you all....RC2 has been on vacation this past week so once he returns he will be able to let us know if the August 4th date is still on target...I have spent the past week working on researching minor league stats and inputting them into an MLE calculator RC2 designed that basically converts minor league stats to major league equivalents....Once RC2 returns I assume he will finish up the hitting prospects as quickly as possible and move on to the pitchers....Thanks for your patience

can the program RC2 made be posted for download for other people to make rosters?

Scorey1974
07-25-2004, 06:11 PM
It's a highly classified program that cost high dollars to make.....so I'm not sure he would want me to share it with anyone....but you could ask him when he gets back.

Torborg4Rent

Wouldn't that affect a player's peak numbers? I mean... there may be guys in the minors doing better than others who have much better potential. What will you do to fix those flaws?

Sorry, but the tool I used was based off of work done by other folks (without their permission) and then modified by myself. Since the basis of the work wasn't done by me, I don't feel comfortable distributing it. And I'll explain more as I address Torberg's comments:

Yes they do affect the peak numbers. I understand your point and I will say that Scorey gave a very high level overview of what I'm doing. I'm not simply looking at this year's performance, or even last year's performance. The spreadsheet simply gives me a tool to easily normalize a player's performance over 600AB and then calculate an MLE based off of those numbers. The MLE is just a small part of the process, but helps speed up that part which was taking a great deal of time. Trust that I know what I'm doing and am doing my best to project players at realistic performance levels.

Thanks in advance.

Well, after 20 hours in the car and two hours sleep in the previous 64 hours, I spent most of yesterday and last night sleeping. Having just awoken from my coma, I'm catching up on a few bills. But that's probably not the update you were looking for :D

Seriously though, at this point I'm hoping to wrap up all hitters by next Monday or so - at which point I'll need to be going out of town for a wedding. While I'm gone, Scorey's going to test the rosters to be sure the hitters aren't developing too much or too fast. Barring any errors, we'll release a first version upon my return. Keep in mind that the pitching prospects will be in the game, but not rated yet.

Hey seedpied....basically I was just having a little fun with anyone who was reading....RC2 didn't write a complicated program that is highly top secret....but he did design a very nice spreadsheet in Excel that converts current player stats into full season stats and also gives a Major League Equivalent (MLE) of those minor league stats...There really is no screen shot to show you...it is just your basic spreadsheet (with some formula's inputted in select cells)...

I believe that they will be included with the roster, at BaseballSimCentral.com. BTW, Scorey, if you need them, I've downloaded a couple hundred updated photos, mostly for current MLB players.

RotoChamp2
07-31-2004, 01:54 AM
While we have the photos, they won't be included within the actual universe. We can distribute the photos with the universe, but each user has to install them on their own I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong here, Scorey.

The hitting prospects are all done, and I even got the existing hitters re-rated. However, I'm out of town at the moment and Scorey is testing the universe while I'm gone. I'm thinking that we'll actually release it around Monday, August 9th. Just remember that pitching prospects won't be done at all yet.

I don't know how long until we will have a final universe, so please don't ask. Thanks for your patience.

Perfect timing! By then I'll have the new Madden 2005 and BBM2k5 will be the last thing I want to play! Ugh. Thanks for all the hard work guys...I'm sure I'll use the rosters...but next years version of Mogul (if there is one) better have more attention paid towards the rosters....considering only one or two things are added a year reasonably good rosters doesn't seem like too much to ask! Who wants to wait till the middle of August for really good rosters honestly?

Honestly, thanks for the hard work....I'm sure a ton of people will appreciate it! :)

why not get mvp baseball 2004 and just simulate the season there, and even use the players in actual games when u want, except there's mad bugs in that game so dont get

Yeah, the cities file has been updated to make things more accurate.

To be honest, credit for the cities file goes elsewhere (I'm blanking on the dude's screenname at the moment...sorry dawg!). I attempted to build a new cities file, but the numbers were far too inflated. This file is accurate. We will include a readme file that will explain how to set things up.

I understand your frustration. Scorey and I both wish we had the time available to dedicate to these rosters and get them out in short order. We've found the process to be a lot more drawn out than expected and both of us are sort of perfectionists and would like to get these rosters out in good shape.

I dont mean to sound like an ungrateful *** but we are all still waiting.

Frankly, I think you two heroes should contact Clay and request a percentage of his income. I, for one, know that I would never buy a new Baseball Mogul were it not for the confidence I had in people making a much better roster than the one included in the game. I don't know if Clay deliberately puts little effort into his rosters because he knows other people will make better ones or if he is just too lazy to bother anyway.

It is a disgrace that Clay should release what is effectively a half-completed game in terms of the rosters and not even plan to improve upon them. What kind of game doesn't even have rookies in it??????

Just my two cents
James

I understand the frustration. But keep in mind that Clay and Ian are a small team doing a ton of work, so I wouldn't say it's "laziness" that's producing the less-than-desirable rosters.

jamesfinch
08-10-2004, 03:52 PM
Firstly I apologise for making it seem as though I was getting on your back. In fact I am doing almost the opposite.

I don't understand how Clay can honestly market a game that is only complete with other peoples' voluntary work. The thing that people have been seeing on these forums for far too long is that "it is only a low-budget game and it is made by a small team", this is indeed true but it is certainly no excuse. If he wishes to sell the game, rather than make it freeware, he must make it complete. At the moment it is not.

As I understand it you receive nothing for making these rosters. This I do not believe. You subscribe to websites such as Baseball America in order to create accurate prospects and don't even cover your costs from the game publisher who is making 20 bucks for every copy he sells. At the very least I would suggest you demand all of your costs to be covered and a free copy of the game. However, you should be expecting a reasonable rate to be paid for your time and perhaps a cut of the profits if the rosters were to made super-accurate with a lot of time spent on them.

It seems, however, that with your projecting systems you are taking roster making to a new level and the case could be made that the rosters will be up to the level at which you should be making money from them already. Until they are released I can't be sure.

I know you will say that you enjoy making the rosters, but people enjoy their jobs. It doesn't mean they don't expect to be paid. As things stand the situation is a disgrace and I will feel embarresed to use your rosters knowing that you have been paid a cent for the hard work. I certainly wouldn't like it to get to the situation when you charge the game owners additional fees for the rosters as this would be making us pay twice for something.

The cost of the game should stay the same, Clay should just give up trying to make rosters and you two should take over the role as a part-time job, making the rosters perfect the day the game comes out and not force the purchasers wait until August before we can play the game properly.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I knew you weren't getting on us :)

I can't say I "enjoy" doing the rosters necessarily. I'm a bit anal retentive, so I probably would've done it anyways - time permitting. I'm just hoping that everyone else will be enjoy them.

I too would like to see the rosters accurate at the time the game is released, but I suppose my expectations aren't very high, as I've been playing sports video games for years without accurate rosters. You should see how much time I used to put into enterring all of the college football player names for my favorite teams and conferences...ugh!

Anyways, I can't really speak to your comments about compensation. I work a full time job during the day (which, like most corporate jobs, pays too little), co-run RotoChamps with my brother, and am working on various other projects for which I don't get paid...I guess I'm just used to not getting compensated for this stuff.

All depends on Scorey's health. He's working on some things right now, but has been pretty darn sick for the past two weeks. So at this point, we're just hoping he can get well enough to do more than rest up once he gets home from work.

I wish I could give you an answer, but at this point I have no idea what the timeline will be. Once we get into the process of rating the pitchers in the system I'll have more of an idea. I'm hoping that it won't take very long and that we can be done in 2-3 weeks, but I'm not yet comfortable saying that's how long it'll take.
