Look at it this way. Your in New York, the best baseball town in the world. You have an acient stadium, but if you contend it will still be packed every night. You have one of the highest payrolls in the game. Obviously you are a Worl Series contender right? Wrong, thats the other New York team. No, we are the Mets. The laughing stock of baseball of you will. 3rd Highest payroll in the game, one of the worst collections of talent around. That's right, I Jimmy ST am taking over the travesty that is....the 2004 New York Mets.
An introduction to the Mets:
C-Mike Piazza is one of the All-Time greats at the position. He provides little defense, but his inane offense for the position more than makes up for it. Horrendously overpirced which means he isn't likely to get moved anytime soon.
1B-Jason Phillips is not a player I have a lot of confidence in. He sure can't play defense, but at 27 he is in his "breakout year" and is signed very cheaply for the next few years.
Eventual trade bait.
2B-Joe Mcewing. Really? Is that the best we can do? Dang.
3B-Ty Wigginton is very cheap and very mediocre. Not all that young either.
SS-Jose Reyes, ahh the crown jewel. Future GG winner and probable number 2 hitter for the rest of his career. I have high hopes for this youngster.
LF-Cliff Floyd is a disaster in the field, but he can hit really well. He is cheap for this team. He won't be around when we are good, but is decent trade bait and can keep us semi-competitive.
CF-Mike cameron is one of my favorite players. He is an ace in the field, fast, and has good power. Sure he K's way too much and will prolly hit .240, but 4 million a year isn't too much for him, and my pitchers will love him.
RF-Is literally up for grabs right now. Karim Garcia(offense), Tsuyoshi Shinjo(defense), Jeff Duncan(youth), and Shane Spencer/Eric valent which are a combination of all 3. Expect serious platoonage here.
On the bench we have the 17 Million Dollar man, Mo Vaughn. Him and Shinjo/Garcia will be the top bench players.
Prospects:
Ummm....Does Jeff Duncan count? My scouts don't so much like him but his defense is good, and he has solid speed and a projectable eye. Also he is just...umm...25. Danny Garcia doesn't strike me as much, but he is just 23 so maybe I'll get lucky.
Pitching:
1-Tom Glavine is a longtime Ace. You really can't go wrong with him year in and year out, however he did struggle(9-14 4.52) last year.
2-Al Leiter is grossly overpaid but he is still an adequate 2 starter.
3-Steve Trachsel is another overpirced(thats 3 if your counting at home) SP. Yay!
4-Pedro Astacio continues the geriatric trend, though he is cheap(unlike the rest of them) if not overly good.
5-Jae Wong Seo....wait, hes young! He is also pretty good! Holy ****, hes cheap? What the **** is he doing on this team! I'm in love.
Clo-David Cone. Thats right, you read that correctly. He is a bit old, and doesnt have the endurance he once did, but I want to give him the chance to reach 200 wins(he needs 6) and I think that with his nasty 6 pitch reperotire he has the stuff to do it. The rest of my bullpen/AA pitching staff is of little consequence, as they are all about replacement level.
So, good team I've got no? Here are my plans for this team. The owner says we need to be in the playoffs in my 4th year. So I am slowly going to cut salary, get this teqam down to resonable size, and hopefully infuse some hot young talent into the team. If that doesnt work? Well, I am from New York...
