THE 2004 MILWAUKEE BREWERS
Well, my Montreal Expos history collapsed, so I have decided to take over my beloved Milwaukee Brewers. As most of you know, the Brew Crew has not had a winning season since 1992, a playoff team since 1982, and a champion since.....well you get the picture.
My goal is simple - make the Milwaukee Brewers the 21st century version of the New York Yankees of the 20th century.
GOALS
* Produce a winning team by 2006. Make the playoffs and win a title before the end of the decade
* Win by using the draft and player development, not splurging on free agents.
* Replace Miller Park with a new 52,000-seat, convertible dome with all the amenities by 2020.

FINANCIAL DATA FOR 2004
TICKETS - $21.00 (Ticket prices will be raised $.25 each two seasons)
FARM SYSTEM - $9 million (2nd)
SCOUTING - $8 million (4th)
MEDICAL - $3 million (16th)
BROADCASTING - Pay TV
CONCESSIONS - All at the league average (Prices will be increased $.25 every three years)

BREWERS NEED TO SLASH $6-7 MILLION FROM PAYROLL
(MILWAUKEE, April 1, 2004) - Faced with an impending $5.9 million deficit, the Milwaukee Brewers announced today they were addressing the problem by slicing their payroll. The Brewers then traded P Victor Santos, P Todd Ritchie, P Rueben Quevedo, P John Foster, P Wes Obermueller and P Leo Estrella to the Chicago White Sox for CF Joe Borchard. Milwaukee also traded OF John Vander Wal and IF Keith Ginter to Minnesota for 1B Justin Morneau. Milwaukee also sent OF Mark Smith to St. Louis for SS Tony Womack. Their final trade saw the Brew Crew send OF Peter Zoccolillo, SS Enrique Cruz and C Keith Osik to the Mets for RP Pedro Feliciano.

OUTFIELD
STARTERS
RF - Ben Grieve (27) - O:77 P:77 - Ben is signed through 2010 at $1.1 million. He is cheap and can fill this position for a number of years. ($1.1 million - 2010)
CF Scott Podsednik (28) - O:81 P:84 - Milwaukee faces a tough decision with Podsednik, as he is a free agent at the end of the season ($1.9 million - 2004)
LF Geoff Jenkins (29) - If Milwaukee falls out of contention or needs to slash payroll, Jenkins will likely be sent packing ($4.8 million - 2006)
BENCH
RF - Jason Conti (29) - O:70 P:70 - Earning the league minimum keeps Conti on the roster. ($300,000 - 2005)
RF - Brady Clark (30) - O:74 P:74 - Brady showed some pop in 2003, but is best suited as an injury replacement or pinch hitter ($460,000 - 2005)
LF Brooks Kieschnick (31) - O:80 P:80 - Now solely a batter, Brooks will likely be the team leader for the next three to four years ($1.15 million - 2009)

INFIELD
STARTERS
1B Lyle Overbay (27) - O:72 P:76 - Overbay gets a shot to start, and could find big rewards in free agency come November ($300,000 - 2004)
2B Junior Spivey (29) - O:84 P:84 - Will Milwaukee see the 2002 version of Junior (.301, 16 HR, 78 RBI) or the 2003 version (.255, 13 HR, 50 RBI)? This will go a long way in determining the team's season ($1.1 million - 2007)
SS Tony Womack (34) - O:67 P:67 - Womack will hold down the position, on the cheap, until Milwaukee drafts its shortstop of the future ($380,000 - 2006)
3B Wes Helms (27) - O:74 P:76 - Milwaukee hopes this will be his breakout season, after hitting .261 with 23 HR and 67 RBI in 2003 ($1.45 million - 2007)
BENCH
IF Craig Counsell (33) - O:72 P:72 - Counsell can play all of the IF except 1B. He will likely spell Womack and Helms ($550,000 - 2004)
2B Trent Durrington (28) - O:60 P:65 - Durrington will likely not see much playing time, because if he does, the Brewers are in trouble ($330,000 - 2007)

CATCHERS
Chad Moeller (29) - O:78 P:78 - Moeller is efficient and cheap, giving Milwaukee time to draft and develop his successor ($630,000 - 2007)
Gary Bennett (31) - O:72 P:72 - Bennett will catch 1-2 games a week and pinch hit ($830,000 - 2008)

BATTING ORDER
1 - Womack (SS)
2 - Spivey (2B)
3 - Posednik (CF)
4 - Jenkins (LF)
5 - Helms (3B)
6 - Overbay (1B)
7 - Moeller (C)
8 - Grieve (RF)

MINORS
2B Rickie Weeks (21) - O:60 P:72 - Weeks will be given a full season in AAA to work on his hitting. He is penciled into the Milwaukee lineup for 2005 or 2006 ($300,000 - 2005)
1B Justin Morneau (22) - O:70 P:75 - Morneau will have a full season in 2004, like Weeks, before Milwaukee decides what to do with him ($300,000 - 2005)
CF Joe Borchard (25) - O:65 P:81 - If Podsednik bolts or is traded, Borchard is the heir apparent in center field, assuming he re-signs with Milwaukee ($300,000 - 2004)
SS Bill Hall (24) - O:67 P:70 - Hall remains an enigma to Milwaukee, and could find himself on the outside looking in if he does not develop soon ($300,000 - 2004)

STARTING ROTATION
Ben Sheets (25) - O:86 P:86 - Sheets is the ace of the franchise, but could leave in the off-season if Milwaukee cannot come up wit the money ($1.8 million - 2004)
Chris Capuano (25) - O:68 P:75 - Capuano has only made five career starts, and is now expected to be the number two man in the rotation ($300,000 - 2004)
David Manning (31) - O:64 P:67 - Manning has only two starts in his big league career, and a 16.20 ERA ($300,000 - 2005)
Doug Davis (28) - O:68 P:68 - Rejected by Texas and Toronto, Davis hopes the third time is the charm ($550,000 - 2006)
Matt Kinney (27) - Kinney knows the leash on him is short, but lucky for him, Milwaukee has few options ($710,000 - 2005)
BULLPEN
Danny Kolb (29) - O:78 P:80 - Kolb is another Milwaukee reclamation project, with high upside potential ($1.35 million - 2004)
Curtis Leskanic (35) - O:81 P:81 - Leskanic will likely be traded in July to a contender ($2.3 million - 2004)
MINORS
Matt Ford (22) - O:67 P:72 - Ford is simply insurance if someone goes down on the big league roster. He has little future otherwise ($300,000 - 2005)

NOTES - As for the pitching, Matt Kinney (4-0, 2.00) has been a very pleasant surprise, while Chris Capuano (1-2, 7.76) and David Manning (1-3, 8.53) have been disasters. In the bullpen, Jayson Durocher (0-0, 19.73) is very close to being sent down and replaced by Matt Ford....SS Tony Womack and 2B Junior Spivey have been excellent leadoff hitters, hitting .355 and .333, respectively. 3B Wes Helms has slugged six HRs to lead the team, but is only batting .250. 1B Lyle Overbay has struggled so far (.250, 1, 8)...Down on the farm, 1B Joe Borchard (.288) and 1B Justin Morneau (.318, 3, 10) are shining...Financially, the team lost $1 million in April, making a Geoff Jenkins or Curtis Leskanic trade look more and more likely.

BREWERS TRADE LESKANIC TO EXPOS
(MILWAUKEE, May 31) - Faced with increasing pressure to reduce their payroll, the Milwaukee Brewers traded RP Curtis Leskanic (1-0, 2.61 ERA) to the Montreal Expos for RP Ray Corcoran (0-0, 1.23 ERA, 5 G). The move reduces the Brewer payroll by $2 million to $23.7 million. Corcoran will become the setup man for RP Danny Kolb. GM Aaron Kramer said, "We need to maintain some fiscal integrity with the team, and still field a competitive ballclub." Speculation continues to swirl around LF Geoff Jenkins (.321-13-45), who the Mariners and Athletics appear interested in.

BREWERS REDUCE TICKET PRICES
(MILWAUKEE - June 30) - In an effort to draw more fans to Miller Park, where they are averaging just 15,077 per game, the worst in the majors, the Milwaukee Brewers annouced today they would reduce their ticket prices from $21 to $14. "We think this will bring more people into the park, and we want them to share in the rebuilding process for this franchise", said GM Aaron Kramer. Having lost $4.1 million already this season, the Brewers are down to just $2.1 million in available cash, which makes the re-signing of CF Scott Podsednik and RP Danny Kolb highly unlikely right now.

FREE AGENTS SIGNED
CF Scott Podsednik - 7 years, $10.1 million - He will be the centerpiece of the franchise as we rebuild. He hit .315 with 14 HRs last year. His 105 K's do concern me, but we will have to accept it.
CF Joe Borchard - 2 years, $830,000 - He may be valuable trade bait in the spring.
SP Chris Capuano - 5 years, $2.2 million - Basically, we need some bodies in the rotation.
RP Ray Corcoran - 2 years, $1.15 million - He performed well last year after being acquired from Montreal.

FREE AGENTS RELEASED
RP Danny Kolb (5 years, $5.1 million) - I am simply not going to spend that much money for a reliever on a team that is not going to win for 2-3 years.
RP Jayson Durocher (3 years - $2.2 million) - Too much for too little
1B Lyle Overbay (5 years, $5.8 million) - We have let him go, and hope Morneau pans out
SS Bill Hall ($770,000 - 3 years) - I just don't think he will ever amount to much.
IF Craig Counsell ($880,000 - 4 years) - Time has simply passed him by.

OCTOBER 1 - Milwaukee signed RP Irving Hutchings to a 2-year, $300,000 contract.

BREWERS CLEAN HOUSE
(MILWAUKEE - April 1, 2005) - The Milwaukee Brewers cleaned house, literally, today, sending most of their most recognizable players packing. "We simply cannot compete financially with the rest of major league baseball until we hit the bottom, and it appears we are headed in that direction this season," said GM Aaron Kramer. The Brewers sold 3B Wes Helms to the New York Mets for $2 million. They then sent SP Chris Capuano, LF Geoff Jenkins and RP Dave Burba to the Los Angeles Dodgers for RP Bobby Petty, the 13th overall pick in the 2005 draft.
The Brewers did sign three players. 3B Aramis Ramirez was inked to a 7-year deal worth $3.7 million annually. Ramirez, who hit .289 for the Cubs last year with 31 HRs and 102 RBI, will become the top power hitter in the Brewer lineup. 2B Brian Roberts was signed to a 4-year, $1.28 million contract. C Trey Lunsford, who made brief apperances with San Francisco in 2002 and 2004, was signed to a 2-year deal worth $370,000 a year.
Milwaukee had to make its most painful deals late in the day, when they sent CF Scott Podsednik to Arizona for LF Jose Arnal. Arnal, who was the D-Back's 2nd round draft pick, will be sent to AAA for seasoning. The Brewers then sent RP Ray Corcoran to St. Louis for RF Burt Hankin.
When the dust had settled, Milwaukee was left with a payroll of $19.6 million, by far the lowest in the major leagues.

BREWERS REVAMP PITCHING STAFF
(MILWAUKEE - April 2, 2005) - The Milwaukee Brewers decided they wanted to shore up their pitching tonight, and give some of their youngsters time to mature at AAA. GM Aaron Kramer said, "Right now, we are asking a lot of Andrew Clarke, Dan Seabury, Steve Benoit and Vincent Downey." The Brewers then announced they had signed the following players:

RP Chad Bradford (5 years, $920,000) - With Oakland last year, he pitched in 93 games, and was 4-7 with a 5.57 ERA. It was his worst year as an Athletic, whom he pitched for for four season.
SP Barry Zito (7 years, $4.6 million) - Zito slumped to 9-13 with a 5.62 ERA last season with Oakland. If he can bounce back, the Brewers have a formidable 1-2 punch with him and Sheets.

BREWERS FINANCIALS
FARM SYSTEM - $8 million (11th)
SCOUTING - $4 million (18th)
MEDICAL - $1 million (19th)
PROJECTED PROFIT - $4.8 million
TICKETS - $14.25
CONCESSIONS - Hot Dogs ($3.30), Beer ($4.80), Ice Cream ($2.55)
BROADCASTS - Local Blackout

NL CENTRAL
St. Louis - LAST YEAR - 102-60 - The defending NL champions will find it harder to operate without OF Gabe Kapler )Los Angeles) and Jim Edmonds (Chicago Cubs). Losing Edmonds to a division rival really hurts. The Cards did add OF Billy McMillion, RP Joe Nathan, SP Brad Penny, and this may be enough to keep the team on top of the Central Division. 1B Albert Pujols and 3B Scott Rolen will anchor the Redbird offense, while Matt Morris will team uo with Penny and Danny Haren in the rotation PROJECTED RECORD - 92-70
Cincinnati - LAST YEAR - 67-95 - The Reds made more than $8 million last season, and decided to spend some of it. One of the big names, though, to leave was OF Ken Griffey, Junior, who heads to Minnesota, taking his 522 career home runs with him. The Reds decided to re-sign a ton of their own players, 14 in all, before Christmas, then signed SP Johan Santana (4 years, $22.4 million) and RP J.C. Romero (4 years, $2.8 million). LF Adam Dunn, RF Austin Kearns and 3B Russ Branyan will be the big sluggers, while Cincinnati will turn to the rookies right away. 1st round draft pick Carlos Fonseca will take over the top spot in the rotation and 2nd round pick Wyatt Stuchinsky will hold down the third spot. Cory Lidle, who went 13-8 last year, will return with Paul Wilson and Aaron Harang. PROJECTED RECORD - 85-77
Chicago - LAST YEAR - 85-77 - The Cubs hope to rebound from last year's disappointment with help from CF Jim Edmonds and 1B Jim Thome anchoring a powerful lineup. They are weak, though, on the left side of the infield with SS Geronimo Quesado and 3B Stan Politz having no big league experience. SP Gil Meche was signed to take the place of Mark Prior, who went to the Dodgers. Meche will join Kerry Wood, Matt Clement and Greg Maddux in the starting rotation. The biggest puzzle is rookie Elvis Heckman, who has been given the number five spot. PROJECTED RECORD - 82-80
Pittsburgh - LAST YEAR - 66-96 - The Pirates are beginning to show signs of moving up. The Big Three of Kip Wells, Josh Fogg and Kris Benson have to do better than their combined 24-36 record of last year. On offense, RF Craig Wilson will be the key piece in the revamped Pirate attack. Phenom RP Curtis Hickman, the second pick in the draft, will be the set-up man for the Bucs.
PROJECTED RECORD - 75-87
Houston - LAST YEAR - 97-65 - The Astros will slide back quite a bit in 2005, as they lost a ton of talent. SP Roger Clemens (Free Agent), CF Craig Biggio (Baltimore), 2B Jeff Kent (Free Agent) and 1B Mike Lamb (Atlanta) all left after the team lost nearly $11 million last season. Players like 2B Dave Matranga and CF Jason Lane will be asked to pick up the slack, while Andy Pettite and Wade Miller will have to carry most of the load of the starting rotation. The bullpen remains a strength with Octavio Dotel and Brad Lidge, but they may not have as many games to save in 2005. PROJECTED RECORD - 73-89
Milwaukee - LAST YEAR - 70-92 - Financial problems spell doom for the Brew Crew. CF Scott Podsednik (Arizona), LF Geoff Jenkins (LA Dodgers), 3B Wes Helms (New York Mets) were all dumped in a salary purge. The Brewers did sign SP Barry Zito and 3B Aramis Ramirez in an effort to maintain some respectability. Ramirez will join LF Brooks Kieschnick and 2B Junior Spiver as the prime cogs in the Milwaukee offense. The pitching staff, which was the focus of the draft, will feature Zito, Ben Sheets, and top draft pick Andrew Clarke, who is just 22. PROJECTED RECORD - 65-97
OTHER DIVISION WINNERS
NL East - New York Mets (92-70)
NL West - Los Angeles (91-70)
Wildcard - Atlanta (86-76)
NL CHAMPION - Los Angeles
AL East - New York Yankees (95-67)
AL Central - Chicago (87-75)
AL West - Anaheim (88-74)
Wildcard - Boston (84-78)
AL CHAMPION - New York Yankees
WORLD CHAMPIONS - New York Yankees

CATCHERS
Chad Moeller (30) - O- 80 P - 80 - After hitting .261 in 127 games last season, Moeller is the prime catcher in the Milwaukee arsenal. He started 85 game last year behind the plate - Signed through 2007 ($630,000)
Gary Bennett (32) - O - 75 P - 75 - Bennett hit nine home runs, a career high, but ran out of steam in the second half - Signed through 2008 ($830,000)
Trey Lunsford (25) - O - 67 P - 93 - Lunsford has a ton of potential. Milwaukee may be patient enough for him to realize it. Ideally, he would be in AAA, but the Brewers can't afford that - Signed through 2006 ($370,000)
INFIELD
1B Justin Morneau (23) - O - 75 P - 80 - Ironically, Milwaukee is hoping Morneau struggles so he can signed cheap in the off-season. After hitting .373 in spring training, it is likely he will price himself out of the future here - Signed through 2004 ($300,000)
2B Junior Spivey (30) - O - 83 P - 83 - Spivey hit his career highs in HRs (29) and RBIs (107) last season. If Milwaukee has any hopes of avoiding the cellar, he has to do the same thing this season - Signed through 2007 ($1.1 million)
SS Tony Womack (35) - O - 61 P - 61 - The end is in sight for Womack's career. He hit .255 last season, but most of those hits came in the first half. His 41 SBs were the one bright spot - Signed through 2005 ($380,000)
3B Aramis Ramirez (26) - O - 80 P - 80 - Ramirez had a great run with the Cubs, who decided not to resign him during the off-season. Milwaukee hopes he holds down the hot corner through the end of the decade - Signed through 2001 ($3.7 million)
RESERVES
2B Brian Roberts (27) - O - 77 P - 77 - Roberts comes to the Brewers from Baltimore, where his playing time dwindled last year. He has speed, something Milwaukee desperately needs - Signed through 2008 ($320,000)
2B Trent Durrington (29) - O - 67 P - 67 - Durrington split time between Milwaukee and AAA last year. He will never be a regular, and will likely be supplanted by Rickie Weeks soon - Signed through 2007 ($330,000)
OUTFIELD
LF Brooks Kieschnick (32) - O - 81 P - 81 - Kieschnick may finally find his groove late in his career. Asked to replace Geoff Jenkins, he has the potential to hit 30 home runs - Signed through 2009 ($1.1 million)
CF Joe Borchard (26) - O - 72 P - 89 - Milwaukee had to send Scott Podsednik and his $10 million contract packing, and hope that Borchard can finally handle playing every day. He never could with the White Sox - Signed through 2006 ($830,000)
RF Ben Grieve (28) - O - 77 P - 77 - Grieve is the prototypical Milwaukee Brewers - not flashy, not completely consistent, and cheap. He withstood several challenges to his starting position last year, and may have to do the same this year - Signed through 2010 ($1.1 million)
RESERVES
RF Brady Clark (31) - O - 72 P - 72 - Clark failed to win the RF spot last season, though he was given several shots at it. It appears he is destined to be a super-sub in Brew City - Signed through 2005 ($460,000)
RF Jason Conti (30) - O - 72 P - 72 - Conti hit .300 in limited action, and played well down the stretch. Milwaukee could not even think about making him the full-time RF though - Signed through 2005 ($300,000)
MINORS
LF Jose Arnal (23) - O - 66 P - 89 - Don't expect him in Milwaukee before 2006 at the earliest - Signed through 2010 ($300,000)
2B Rickie Weeks (22) - O - 65 P - 80 - Weeks has a dwindling window of opportunity in Milwaukee. The team may not hold on to him past next season - Signed through 2005 ($300,000)
RF Burt Hankin (21) - O - 59 P - 75 - Hankin is a long ways from the majors. The earliest we would see him is 2007 - Signed through 2010 ($300,000)
LF Placido Panfilo (19) - O - 60 P - 80 - Panfilo finds himself behind Arnal on the depth chart, and may have to find a spot elsewhere in the outfield to survive - Signed through 2010 ($300,000)

STARTING ROTATION
Barry Zito (26) - O - 97 P - 97 - If Milwaukee ever becomes a contender, it will be because of Zito and Sheets. If they want to become a contender, they have to find a third stud in the rotation - Signed through 2011 ($4.6 million)
Ben Sheets (26) - O - 86 P - 86 - Sheets finally broke through the 11-win barrier with a 13-15 record last year. He also set a career mark in strikeouts (196) and walks (79) - Signed through 2008 ($1.6 million)
Andrew Clarke (22) - O - 77 P - 86 - Milwaukee would have liked to place their top pick in AAA, but the talent is so bare on the roster, they were forced to put in the #3 spot in the rotation - Signed through 2010 ($300,000)
Matt Kinney (28) - O - 70 P - 70 - His 11-9 record was a surpise for the Brewers in 2003. If he continues to improve, the Brewers could hit .500 - Signed through 2005 ($710,000)
Doug Davis (29) - O - 70 P - 70 - Davis's career continues to resurrect itself, but he is one bad stretch from heading to the bullpen, and one bad season from being unemployed again - Signed through 2006 ($550,000)
BULLPEN
Luis Vizcaino (30) - O - 77 P - 77 - Milwaukee has Vizcaino on a short lease. One bad stretch of games, and Bradford is the closer - Signed through 2007 ($610,000)
Chad Bradford (30) - O - 79 P - 80 - Bradford comes from Oakland, where he was consistent up to last year. His ERA ballooned to 5.57, nearly a run and a half more than his career mark. Milwaukee is hoping it was an anomaly - Signed through 2009 ($920,000)
Bobby Petty (22) - O - 78 P - 89 - This is Milwaukee's closer of the future, while, for now, he will learn the ropes in a mop-up capacity - Signed through 2010 ($300,000)
Pedro Feliciano (28) - O - 70 P - 75 - When you need someone to eat up innings in meaningless games, call on Feliciano - Signed through 2005 ($300,000)
Davis Manning (32) - O - 65 P - 66 - Milwaukee's emergency starter was 3-13 last year, and is 3-15 for his career - Signed through 2005 ($300,000)
Dan Seabury (23) - O - 67 P - 78 - Seabury should be in AAA, but Milwaukee needs him in the bigs to keep a full roster - Signed through 2010 ($300,000)
MINORS
SP Steve Benoit (22) - O - 67 P - 86 - Benoit's future has him alongside Clarke and Sheets and Zito - in 2006 - Signed through 2010 ($300,000)
SP Vincent Downey (22) - O - 60 P - 80 - Downey is a projected #4 or #5 when he hits the bigs - Signed through 2010 ($300,000)
RP Matt Ford (23) - O - 67 P - 71 - Time is quickly running out on Ford to make the bigs, and earn his first win as he is 0-3 in the majors - Signed through 2005 ($300,000)
RP Sam Ezran (22) - O - 59 P - 75 - A draft pick who might pan out if everything goes his way - Signed through 2010 ($300,000)
RP Irving Hutchens (27) - O - 58 P - 59 - Hutchens will probably not survive to see the 2006 season in uniform - Signed through 2006 ($300,000)

BREWERS MAKE SEVERAL MOVES TO SHORE UP TEAM
(MILWAUKEE - April 29, 2005) - Trying to improve a lineup that has been hit with injuries, the Milwaukee Brewers signed a number of players today, including two old favorites. Milwaukee added nearly $4.8 million in salaries to their payroll, which now stands at $30.2 million, still last in the majors:
1B Lyle Overbay (28) - Signed to a 7-year contract at $2.6 million per year. This likely means 1B Justin Morneau is no longer in Milwaukee's long-term plans.
CF Tike Redman (28) - Signed to a 5-year deal at $940,000 per season - Redman will take Joe Borchard's spot in the lineup.
RP Danny Kolb (30) - Signed to a 5-year, $7.5 million contract - Kolb was unsigned in free agency, and returns to anchor the Milwaukee bullpen, ending Luis Vizcaino's brief stint as closer.
To make room, Milwaukee optioned C Trey Lunsford, 2B Trent Durrington and RP Dan Seabury to AAA.

BREWERS SIGN CLEMENS
(MILWAUKEE - May 31, 2005) - After seeing Dave Manning struggle through another start, the Milwaukee Brewers today announced the signing of future Hall-of-Famer Roger Clemens to a 3-year, $4.8 million contract. Clemens is 323-165 in his career with 4308 strikeouts. "We feel he can provide stability to the rotation, and some invaluable experience to our young staff," said GM Aaron Kramer. Clemens has struggled in the independent Northern League, going 2-1 with a 4.29 ERA, but Milwaukee is confident he can solidify the top of the rotation. With the move, Milwaukee sent Manning to AAA, and said it is unlikely he would be called up the remainder of the season.

BREWERS TRADE RAMIREZ, GRIEVE TO REDS
(MILWAUKEE - April 1, 2006) - The Milwaukee Brewers traded 3B Aramis Ramirez and RF Ben Grieve to the Cincinnati Reds for RP Dan Cox. This appears to be a salary-dumping move by Milwaukee, and reduces their payroll to $26.3 million. GM Aaron Kramer said, "We now have about $5-6 million to work with in the next few days." In other news, the Brewers announced they will raise their ticket prices to $14.50.

BREWERS ANNOUNCE FREE AGENT SIGNINGS
(MILWAUKEE - April 2, 2006) - Milwaukee traded SP Roger Clemens, RP Danny Kolb and C Chad Moeller to Arizona for IF Ken Dexter. Dexter is projected to be a first baseman, but can play third as well. The Milwaukee Brewers announced several free agent signings today:
C Josh Bard - $770,000, 5 years - Bard has spent the last four seasons with Cleveland, but saw his playing time decline last year.
RF Alex Escobar - $2 million, 5 years - Escobar had a good 2005 season in Cleveland (.260-22-81). He will step into the starting lineup right away.
SP Matt Clement - $5.3 million, 7 years - Clemens will join Barry Zito and Ben Sheets in one of the most promising rotations in the NL Central.

Let's have some more. I am interested to see how well you do at rebuilding the Brewers, since one -- they are my favorite team, and two -- I couldn't do it my self. Let's keep it going TruthBeacon

NL CENTRAL
ST. LOUIS - LAST YEAR (96-66) - The Cardinals should win another division title. Despite losing Bo Hart at 2B, the Cards believe Mark de la Rosa can make up for that. LF Jason Michaels and 1B Albert Pujols anchor the offense. The pitching staff was bolstered by Mark Buehrle, who went 83-51 over the past six seasons with the White Sox. He will replace Woody Williams in the St. Louis rotation. PROJECTED RECORD - 93-69
CHICAGO - LAST YEAR (80-82) - The Cubs were a major disappointment in 2005, and made some major moves in the off-season. Sammy Sosa (free agent) and Matt Clement (to Milwaukee) were released. 1B Mark Teixeira and 3B Morgan Engsberg were both brought in from Texas. Engsberg replaces Stan Politz who flopped at the hot corner. On the mound, Scott Scherr and Elvis Heckman will be teamed with Greg Maddux and Kerry Wood. PROJECTED RECORD - 86-76
CINCINNATI - LAST YEAR (79-83) - The Reds made a major investment in Johan Santana (5-6) and J.C Romero (4-6) last year to shore up their bullpen, and got little of that return back. In Carlos Fonseca (20), Jake Peavy (24), John Hebert (22) and Wyatt Stuchinsky (25), Cincinnati has one of the youngest rotations in the NL. The Reds' offense will rely on Adam Dunn, Russ Branyan and Sean Casey once again, while bidding farewell to Austin Kearns (Boston) and Willy Mo Pena (Arizona). PROJECTED RECORD - 82-80
MILWAUKEE - LAST YEAR (71-91) - There is some light at the end of the tunnel for the Brew Crew, who have not been above .500 since 1992. Milwaukee tried to shore up some glaring needs with C Josh Bard, P Matt Clement and RF Alex Escobar. Clement will join Barry Zito and Ben Sheets in a daunting rotation. The key lies with Andrew Clarke (9-11, 4.47) and rookie Rick Lizzi. On offense, LF Brooks Kieschnick needs another 49-HR season to power the Brewer offense. PROJECTED RECORD - 81-81
PITTSBURGH - LAST YEAR (73-89) - The Bucs improved seven games, but lost nearly $5 million last year, leading to the loss of 1B Lance Niekro. Pittsburgh drafted P Al Stanton with the 4th overall pick and he will be shoved right into the rotation, behind Kip Wells (8-14). The rest of the staff is very pedestrian - Kris Benson (9-12), Ramon Monreal (7-8) and Zach Day (13-6). Sergio Mitre is out till May with a torn rotator cuff. On offense, RF Craig Wilson and 3B Rob Mackowiak are the majority of the power, while rookies 2B Kevin Zwillinger (3rd round) and CF Julio Garza (5th round) are big stretches. PROJECTED RECORD - 67-95
HOUSTON - LAST YEAR (77-85) - Houston lost 20 games in the standings, but finally turned a profit. As a result, they signed 2B Keith Ginter and P Dontrelle Willis to contracts totalling $11.3 million. 3B Morgan Ensberg and CF Jason Lane, along with three pitchers (Tim Wakefield, Brad Lidge and Mike Gallo), were all released. Willis will join Wade Miller and Andy Petitte in a weak rotation, while the offense remains familiar with Lance Berkman, Richard Hidalgo, Jeff Bagwell and Brad Ausmus PROJECTED RECORD - 65-97
OTHER DIVISION WINNERS
NL East - New York Mets (100-62)
NL West - Los Angeles (94-68)
NL Wildcard - Atlanta (91-71)
NL CHAMPION - New York Mets
AL East - New York Yankees (102-60)
AL Central - Cleveland (96-66)
AL West - Oakland (83-79)
AL Wildcard - Boston (92-70)
AL CHAMPION - New York Yankees
WORLD SERIES - New York Yankees
AL Cy Young - Tim Hudson (Oakland)

BREWERS SIGN MORNEAU, LOIAZA
(MILWAUKEE, April 26) - Faced with the loss of 1B Lyle Overbay for over two weeks with a pulled groin, the Milwaukee Brewers signed one of their former players, 1B Justin Morneau, to a 2-year, $1.34 million contract. To bolster their pitching staff, Milwaukee signed P Esteban Loaiza to a 5-year, $15 million. Loaiza will replace rookie Rick Lizzi in the starting rotation. Lizzi (0-1, 7.32) was sent to AAA. OBSERVATIONS - "Obviously, the collapse down the stretch was disappointing. We had a chance to make the playoffs, but we did not have the instinct to do so. We will learn that in the coming years. We need to address our starting pitching and our situation at shortstop in the off-season."

BREWERS ANNOUNCE FREE AGENT SIGNINGS
(MILWAUKEE - April 1, 2007) - The Milwaukee Brewers increased their payroll today by adding several players to a team that contended for a NL Central title last year. The Brewers signed 1B Carlos Pena, RF Ryan Ludwick, 2B D'Angelo Jimenez, 3B Mike Lowell, RP Javier Lopez, SP Mark Redman and SP Wade Miller
Ludwick.

BREWERS CLEAR SYSTEM
(MILWAUKEE - April 1, 2006) - The Milwaukee Brewers traded 2B Junior Spivey and 1B Justin Morneau to the Chicago White Sox for RP Geoff Lesser. Spivey and Morneau were both slated to be free agents at the end of the 2007 season. The Brewers also sold RF Alex Escobar to the ChiSox for $2 million.
The Brewers also cleaned out their farm system by sending 1B Nate Sullivan, LF Luis Matutes, LF Placido Panfilo, P Dan Cox, P Sam Ezran and P Tony Thomas to Oakland for RF Kyle Oberdorfer.
In their final deal, Milwaukee sent 2B Trent Durrington, SP Esteban Loaiza and P Ozzie Weis to Atlanta for $2 million.

OUTFIELD
LF Brooks Kieschnick (O - 75 P- 77) - Brooks has connected for 113 home runs in the past three season. Milwaukee is hoping for one more big year, before Jose Arnal takes over.
SIGNED : 2009 ($1.1 Million)
CF Tike Redman (O - 84 P - 84) - The Brewers are taking a chance that Redman can produce for a full season. Their release of Joe Borchard leaves them with few options otherwise
SIGNED : 2009 ($940,000)
RF Ryan Ludwick (O - 91 P - 91) - Ludwick lost his starting position in Cleveland last year, and is hoping a chance of scenery will jump start his career again. If not, Karl Oberdorfer is waiting in the wings.
SIGNED : 2013 ($1.6 million)
LF Jose Arnal (O - 76 P - 93) - The former Diamondback is a work in progress. Milwaukee figures he will be the starter in left come 2008.
SIGNED : 2010 ($300,000)
RF Karl Oberdorfer (O - 79 P - 92) - Acquired from Oakland, Oberdorfer is either going to be a major star in Milwaukee or a bust somewhere else. He has a ton of potential, but the Brewers have hitched their wagon to Ryan Ludwick.
SIGNED : 2011 ($300,000)
INFIELD
1B Lyle Overbay (O - 78 P - 79) - Overbay is one of the few remaining Brewers from the 2004 season. Will he be the 1B for the entire season remains to be seen? Carlos Pena is the only other option, truly, right now.
SIGNED : 2011 ($2.6 million)
2B D'Angelo Jimenez (O - 80 P - 80) - The Brewers parted ways with Junior Spivey and picked up Jimenez from the Reds in the free agent market. A career .266 hitter, he has to keep his bat hot or Rickie Weeks will be given the job
SIGNED : 2013 ($1 million)
SS Brian Roberts (O - 77 P - 77) - Roberts continues to be a threat on the base paths, with 88 steals in the past two years. Milwaukee has no real backup for him at this point.
SIGNED : 2008 ($320,000)
3B Mike Lowell (O - 84 P - 84) - Lowell is expected to be the main power source in the Milwaukee offense. He is the first legitimate 3B Milwaukee has had in more than a decade
SIGNED : 2011 ($3.9 million)
1B Carlos Pena (O - 77 P - 77) - Pena was signed off the scrap heap, and is expected to play a key role off the bench. He can play some outfield if also needed.
SIGNED : 2012 ($370,000)
2B Rickie Weeks (O - 75 P - 86) - Weeks will be given a shot at second or short if Jimenez or Roberts falter. Milwaukee has waited for three years to see if Weeks is the answer. This year, they have to have an answer.
SIGNED : 2007 ($480,000)
CATCHERS
C Josh Bard (O - 77 P - 77) - Many thought that Bard would be the backup catcher, but he hit .279 in the spring to clinch the starting spot.
SIGNED : 2010 ($770,000)
C Trey Lunsford (O - 75 P - 81) - Lunsford signed a big deal in the off-season, then lost the starting position in spring training. He should still catch 50-60 games and win the job in 2008.
SIGNED : 2010 ($1.4 million)
C Gary Bennett (O - 73 P - 73) - Bennett appeared in only 37 games last year, mostly as a pinch hitter. His role should not be any different in 2007.
SIGNED : 2008 ($830,000)
MINORS
1B Ken Dexter (O - 70 P - 80) - He hit .296 with 11 HRs last year in AAA. He still needs to develop some defensive range before he is ready for the majors
SIGNED : 2011 ($300,000)
RF Wade Bryan (O - 62 P - 80) - Bryan has never had much success hitting in the minors (.240 last year in AAA). This fact alone will likely prevent him from making it to Milwaukee.
SIGNED : 2011 ($300,000)
1B Bobby Schiller (O - 69 P - 88) - Once Schiller learns to hit for average (.256 last year in AAA), he should pass Dexter on the depth chart in replacing Overbay. He did hit 25 HRs last year.
SIGNED : 2011 ($300,000)
RF Bert Hankin (O - 68 P - 81) - Milwaukee has waited two years for the former Cardinal draft pick (5th round - 2005) to pan out. His defense is superb, his offense suspect.
SIGNED : 2010 ($300,000)
1B Phil Adramsky (O - 65 P - 89) - Adramsky cannot hit for average (.232 in 2007), but he can hit for power (17 HRs last year). He has to do both to make it to the bigs.
SIGNED : 2011 ($300,000)
RF Jason Comstock (O - 63 P - 92) - The first round draft pick will need to work on his contact, and his defense before Milwaukee is ready to call him up.
SIGNED : 2012 ($300,000)

STARTING ROTATION
Barry Zito (O - 96 P - 96) - Zito is a Cy Young winner in the making. His record with Milwaukee is 36-20, a key reason for their turnaround. At 28, he has many years ahead of productivity
SIGNED : 2011 ($4.6 million)
Matt Clement (O - 93 P - 93) - Clement left Chicago in order to be more than a .500 pitcher (51-42 in four years). His first year in Milwaukee was 16-14, par for the course. One of these days he will win 20.
SIGNED : 2012 ($5.3 million)
Wade Miller (O - 87 P - 87) - Miller was signed to replace Ben Sheets in the rotation. Sheets was never consistent, and up until last year, Miller has been (85-59 career record). He should win between 15 and 17 games.
SIGNED : 2012 ($2.6 million)
Andrew Clarke (O - 87 P - 87) - The former first round pick has done more than Milwaukee expected in the past two years. He appears very comfortable in the number four spot.
SIGNED : 2010 ($300,000)
Mark Redman (O - 85 P - 85) - Redman may be the best #5 pitcher in the National League. 2006 was an off-year (8-13) after three straight winning campaigns. He replaces Esteban Loaiza in the roation.
SIGNED : 2012 ($2.5 million)
BULLPEN
Chad Bradford (O - 85 P - 85) - Bradford lost his closer role in August, despite 32 saves. He won it back in spring training, but has to look over his shoulder all season.
SIGNED : 2009 ($920,000)
Javier Lopez (O - 84 P - 84) - Lopez has a rough season in Kansas City (4-4, 27 SV, 5.78). Milwaukee is asking him to be a setup man, not a closer.
SIGNED : 2011 ($1.5 million)
Cam Bloom (O - 81 P - 91) - Bloom failed down the stretch as the closer with six blown saves in 15 chances. The Brewers realize his time to be a stopper is down the road.
SIGNED : 2011 ($300,000)
Bobby Petty (O - 77 P - 84) - Petty dropped his ERA by more than a run in 2006. Another similar move will put him in elite company.
SIGNED : 2010 ($300,000
Rick Lizzi (O - 74 P - 85) - Lizzi is the emergency starter (2-6, 5.47 ERA in 11 starts last year). He is still a hopeful for the rotation in 2-3 years.
SIGNED : 2011 ($300,000)
Dan Seabury (O - 75 P - 79) - Seabury was a huge disappointment in 2006 (1-2, 8.87 ERA). A similar season in 2007 could mean a ticket out of town
SIGNED : 2010 ($300,000)
MINORS
SP Steve Benoit (O - 69 P - 77) - The former second round pick is projected to be no more than a long reliever in the bullpen after failing to develop.
SIGNED : 2010 ($300,000)
SP Vincent Downey (O - 64 P - 77) - Downey has never made it to the majors, and unless something dramatic happens this year, he likely won't.
SIGNED : 2010 ($300,000)
SP Alano Gomiz (O - 68 P - 77) - Gomiz is one more mediocre pitcher in the Brewer minor league system. Along with Benoit and Downey, this is one area Milwaukee has to address.
SIGNED : 2012 ($300,000)
SP Kenny Toscanini (O - 68 P - 77) - A second round pick, Toscanini has a slight chance to crack the starting rotation before the decade is out.
SIGNED : 2012 ($300,000)
RP Geoff Lesser (O - 74 P - 88) - Acquired from the White Sox, Lesser has a chance to develop into a nice member of the bullpen. He saved 12 games last year in AA.
SIGNED : 2012 ($300,000)

WHERE ARE THEY NOW - THE 2005 BREWER DRAFT
BREWERS PICKS
1st - SP Andrew Clarke (O - 77 P - 86) - Clarke has been a bona fide hit for the Brewers in his first two seasons, going 22-18 with a 3.90 ERA. He has already exceeded his projected peak on draft night (86) by hitting an 87 on the scouting reports. With 394 strikeouts at age 24, Clarke could become what Ben Sheets never was in Milwaukee - a consisten winner.
2nd - SP Steve Benoit (O - 67 P - 86) - Benoit never developed the way the Brewers wanted. He has fallen far short of his peak and has only made two starts in the bigs (1-0, 9.00). He will likely end up being a AAA pitcher with only emergency callup status.
3rd - RP Dan Seabury (O - 68 P - 83) - Another pitching prospect who was hurt by the Brewers lack of spending in the minors. He has made 38 appearances in two seasons, but saw his ERA balloon to 8.87 in 2006. If he fails to turn it around this year, he could be out.
4th - SP Vincent Downey (O - 61 P - 78) - Downey went 10-5 with a 4.15 ERA last year in AAA. He needs to improve his power and endurance numbers if he wants to make to the big leagues
5th - LF Placido Panfilo (O - 57 P - 77) - He was sold to Oakland in the offseason after two miserable years in AAA. He hit .250 last year and .219 the year before. He had no future in Milwaukee.
6th - RP Sam Ezran (O - 59 P - 74) - Ezran was exceeding his draft day expectations, but was sent to Oakland during the off-season. In two seasons at AAA, Sam was 9-9 with an ERA around 5.00. Milwaukee saw little return on their investment
SYNOPSIS - Clarke will make this draft a success if he keeps up his early success. The slips on Benoit and Seabury have hurt the Brewers' long-term rebuilding plans, and shows what it means to invest in the minors.

MILWAUKEE (99-63) - The Brewers have shown steady improvement the past three seasons (70 wins-71-87) and appear poised to end St. Loui's three-year run at the top of the division. SP Ben Sheets, 3B Edwards Guzman and CF Joe Borchard will not be part of the team, as the Brewers let them go at the end of the last season. The Brewers took an active role in the free agent market, signing 3B Mike Lowell, RF Ryan Ludwick, 2B D'Angelo Jimenez and 1B Carlos Pena to help the offense. To solidify their pitching, Milwaukee signed Wade Miller and Mark Redman for the starting staff and Javier Lopez for the bullpen.
STARTING ROTATION - Barry Zito (18-9), Matt Clement (16-14), Wade Miller (7-11, Houston), Andrew Clarke (13-7), Mark Redman (8-13, Oakland)
FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK REVIEW
2005 - SP Andrew Clarke (O - 77 P - 86) - Clarke has been a bona fide hit for the Brewers in his first two seasons, going 22-18 with a 3.90 ERA.
2006 - RP Cam Bloom (O - 81 P - 91) - Bloom was 7-6 last year with the Brewers and saved 9 games. He also blew six saves, which is why he has been moved to long relief role this season.
2007 - 1B Jason Comstock (O - 63 P - 92) - Comstock is not projected to be a contributor to the Brewers until 2009 at the earliest. He is a possible .275-25-85 type player when he does arrive.

CHICAGO (89-73) - Three straight years of declining wins and declining profits have led to some major changes on the North Side. Gregg Maddux and Joe Borowski were shown the door, while 3B Scott Rolen and RF Jay Gibbons were signed to augment the offense. To help the pitching staff, Brandon Clausen, Jose Jimenez and Jose Contreras were inked to deals.
STARTING ROTATION - Kerry Wood (10-8), Scott Scherr (14-8), Elvis Heckman (6-11), Ben Price (14-11-AAA), Gil Meche (12-6)
FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK REVIEW
2005 - C Rudy Thompson (O - 88 P - 88) - A career .216 hitter, with 59 RBI in 153 games is not what the Cubs expected. Thompson was supposed to be a power hitter, but has only connected on nine HRs in his 2-year career.
2006 - SP Scott Scherr (O - 86 P - 88) - Scherr won 14 games in his rookie season, and is expected to be an anchor on the Cubs' staff for many years. He has excellent control and an above-average fast ball.
2007 - SP Ben Price (O - 76 P - 88) - The Cubs continue to build up an impressive arsenal of arms in the minors. Price, who has the best control of all of the 2007 draftees, will start in Chicago right away.

ST. LOUIS (77-85) - All good things must come to an end, and the end is here for the Redbirds. Albert Pujols is a Yankee, Scott Rolen is a Cub, and Danny Haren is a Diamondback. With them went the heart and soul of this franchise. Signing SS Omar Infante to a 5-year, $60 million deal is a sign of deep desperation, since Infante is a career .258 hitter. LF Jason Michaels and RF Reggie Sanders will have to carry a team which has been decimated by free agency.
STARTING ROTATION - Mark Buehrle (14-5), Matt Morris (13-7), Brad Penny (10-8), Jeff Suppan (7-6), Jose Acevedo (0-1, Cincinnati)
FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK REVIEW
2005 - LF Gordon Silverstone (O - 69 P - 77) - Silverstone has been a major disappointment. He has never been on the major league roster, and does appear ready to unseat Michaels in left field anytime soon.
2006 - RF Mark Ellington (O - 64 P - 86) - Ellington made a brief appearance with the Cards in the playoffs last year, but struggled at AAA (.249-18-64). He still appears to be 2-3 years away.
2007 - 1B Enrico Montejo (O - 68 P - 92) - Montejo has some power in his bat, but is not projected to be in the bigs until 2009 or 2010.

CINCINNATI (74-88) - The Reds won 86 games in 2006, but will be hard pressed to repeat that figure. They lost 3B Russell Branyan (.214-35-90), 2B D'Angelo Jimenez (.253-6-51), SS Felipe Lopez (.236-12-70) and LF Adam Dunn (.247-37-96) on offense, leaving 1B Graham Koonce (.291-16-103 with Minnesota) and LF Jermaine Clark (.325-9-45) to pick up most of the pieces. Their pitching staff lost SP Jake Peavy (16-8, 4.01) and will rely on youth to keep them in the race.
STARTING ROTATION - Carlos Fonseca (13-9), John Hebert (14-12), Wyatt Stuchinsky (9-12), Cory Lidle (9-8) and Aaron Harang (8-1 in AAA)
FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK REVIEW
2005 - SP Carlos Fonseca (O - 93 P - 93) - The fourth overall pick has been a gem for the Reds, winning 28 games in two years. His BB-K ratio of 202-298 has to improve for him to move up to elite status.
2006 - SP John Hebert (O - 86 P - 88) - Another positive pick for Cincinnati, Hebert went 14-12 in his rookie season with a 3.70 ERA and 191 SO's. His endurance is on the low side, but that is about the only knock on him
2007 - RP Luis Canseco (O - 76 P - 85) - It is not certain if Canseco can be a stopper for the Reds, but he does have the potential to be a top-notch long setup man. Still, his pick at #20 was a suprise for a team with many other long-term needs.

PITTSBURGH (74-88) - Pittsburgh continues to flirt with a winning record, which would be its first since 1992, but cannot seem to get over the hump. Losing C Jason Kendall (.298-13-82) and 3B Rob Mackowiak (.294-32-97) does not help, but the Bucs did manage to keep 1B Carlos Rivera (.310-24-81) and signed C Yorvit Torrealba (.314-8-87 with San Francisco). CF Alex Sanchez and SS Julio Lugo were signed to big contracts, and their success will make or break this franchise. The pitching staff will continue to rebuild around youth, while trying to straighten out Kris Benson and Kip Wells, which may be lost causes.
STARTING ROTATION - Al Stanton (10-16), Kevin Huey (12-6 at AA), Kip Wells (6-2), Ramon Monreal (11-12), Kris Benson (5-12)
FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK REVIEW
2005 - RP Curtis Hickman (O - 87 P - 88) - Hickman did not even last one full season with the Pirates, being traded to the Giants with 2B Bobby Hill for RP Brady Boston, CF David DeJesus, 1B Lance Niekro and RP Manny Aybar. Only Boston and Aybar remain, while Hickman has gone on to become a key member of the Giant bullpen.
2006 - SP Al Stanton (O - 86 P - 91) - Stanton is the top dog on the Pirates staff, with excellent power and movement. His only drawback is control, seeing that he walked 108 batters in 195.2 innings last year.
2007 - SP Kevin Huey (O - 80 P - 88) - Huey will try to make the jump from AA to the majors this year. The odds are against him, and the Pirates may regret not sending him to AAA this year.

HOUSTON (67-95) - Losing 101 games and nearly $5 million was not part of the rebuilding plan in Houston, so they will start new in 2007. SP Wade Miller, SP Brandon Duckworth, SS Adam Everett and RF Richard Hidalgo were shown the door, while the Astros signed CF Marlon Byrd, SP Curt Schilling, CF Eric Byrnes, SP John Thomson, CF Jamal Strong and LF Jason Ellison. Yes, they signed three center fielders to a team that needs pitching bad. The heart of the offense is getting older as well - Lance Berkman (31), Jermaine Dye (33) and Jeff Bagwell (38) - and could break down at anytime.
STARTING ROTATION - Dontrelle Willis (13-11), Andy Petitte (11-13), John Thomson (15-10 with Atlanta), Curt Schilling (8-12 with Philadelphia), Trent Shagrin (12-4 at AA)
FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK REVIEW
2005 - LF Otto Maganaris (O - 75 P - 75) - Maganaris has been a colossal flop for Houston, batting .142 in 123 career games with only four runs batted in. His tenure in Houston is shaky to say the least.
2006 - C Jerry Cronkhite (O - 75 P - 84) - Cronkhite, the 7th pick overall, batted .253 in his first full season. He has won the starting position, and should keep it for several years to come.
2007 - CF Norm Cunningham (O - 77 P - 81) - The 3rd overall pick was a major suprise, and a big reach for the Astros, according to many scouts. He has never hit above .268 in the minors, and has never cracked more than nine HRs despite some decent power potential. His failure to develop could be another setback for this reeling franchise.
