After 6 disappointing seasons in a row, all of which coming in last place, there was a complete overhaul in the Devil Ray organization. Who did they call on? Baseball experts? In a sense. They called on a 22 year old Harvard graduate who has followed baseball for 15 years...ME! (although I'm not really a Harvard graduate :( ). I will be using Scorey and Rotochamp's latest roster, and for the first season or two I will just give an overview of the season, then once we get good we will see how it goes.

Line-up:
1) Julio Lugo - SS, 85/85
2) Rocco Baldelli - CF, 76/83
3) Carl Crawford - LF, 84/95
4) Aubrey Huff - DH, 87/100
5) Tino Martinez - 1B, 73/73
6) Toby Hall - C, 80/80
7) Jose Cruz, Jr. - RF, 83/83
8) Damian Rolls - 3B, 76/87
9) Jason Maxwell - 2B, 62/62

Rotation:
1) John Halama - 74/74
2) Doug Waechter - 72/78
3) Jorge Sosa - 74/79
4) Jeremi Gonzalez - 71/71
5) Seth McClung - 70/88

Bullpen (of note):
Closer - Lance Carter - 77/80
Setup - Danys Baez - 82/82

Prospects:
Delmon Young - RF, 60/72 (He usually turns out better than that)
Jonny Gomes - LF, 66/99
Wes Bankston - RF, 62/100
Jason Pridie - LF, 56/87
B.J. Upton - SS, 68/92

The obvious first step to take is to improve the pitching

I have 2 goals:
1) Win at least 81 games
2) Come in 3rd place or better

I think these goals are very realistic because many players on our team have developed and gotten better. This year will depend on how the pitching does.

Line-up:
1) Rocco Baldelli - CF, 80/81
2) Damian Rolls - 3B, 79/89
3) Carl Crawford - LF, 89/91

8) Ricardo Bolero - 2B, 65/72 (my 3rd round pick)
9) Clarence Cochran - SS, 60/75 (my 4th round pick)

My LF prospects can expect to be traded over the course of this year or the off-season for a 1B, 2B, or SS

Rotation:
1) Derek Lowe - 88/88
2) Mike Weatherwax - 79/91 (my 1st round pick)
3) Doug Waechter - 76/76
4) Jorge Sosa - 78/78
5) Chad Gaudin - 74/79

BJ Upton - SS, 20, 74/93 (can expect a mid-season call-up)
Jason Pridie - RF, 21, 71/93 (I changed him to a right fielder and should be our RF of the future)

This is the year. We have all of our top prospects up, and our line-up is looking EXCELLENT. While our pitching is not quite as good, I believe it is suitable and is capable of having us play meaningful games in September (see below). My 4 goals for the season:

Well, things started off bad on April 11, when Brad Hawpe went down for 65 days with a ruptured cervical disk (Ron Coomer was signed to fill the spot, he hit 8th) and we started off 2-7, but we bounced back to get to 15-15. By the time Hawpe was ready to come back, we were 27-35, which is decent. By the trade deadline we made it back to 52-51! On August 29, Carl Crawford went down for the season with a stretched knee ligament (Matt Diaz took his spot for the rest of the year, 80/80). By the end of the season, we had met 3 of the 4 goals I set up:

1) Win 85 games - We went 88-74
2) Hit at least .280 as a team - We only hit .272
3) Team ERA under 4.50 - 4.40
4) Play meaningful games in September - After starting out 2-7, 15-15, 27-35, and 52-51, we won 36 of our last 59 games to WIN THE DIVISION!!! PLAYOFFS!!!

Playoffs (Carl Crawford made his return):
Division Series v. Cleveland
Game 1: Cleveland wins 12-3 (Doug Waechter was crushed for 8 runs in 3 innings, Weatherwax and Lowe won't be available until Game 3)
Game 2: Devil Rays win 4-1 (Jorge Sosa pitched a gem, 8 innings 1 run)
Game 3: Devil Rays win 7-3 (Mike Weatherwax did not disappoint in his first career playoff game, throwing 8 innings giving up only 2 runs)
Game 4: Cleveland wins 4-3 (Being up 2-1, the Indians scored 2 in the top of the 9th to go up 4-1, and we got 2 back in the bottom but it wasn't enough)
Game 5: Cleveland wins 5-3 (Jesus Colome gabe up 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th to lose it)

It was a good run. I'm proud of my team and can't wait until next year.

Hitting (AVG/HR/RBI/OBP):
1) Carl Crawford - LF, 99/99, .285/6/59/.330 (124 games)
2) Jason Bourgeois - 2B, 100/100, .322/9/108/.379
3) Jonny Gomes - RF, 98/100, .226/19/85/.336
4) Aubrey Huff - DH, 98/100, .307/33/125/.391
5) Brad Hawpe - 1B, 82/82, .237/14/51/.312 (99 games)
6) Pete LaForest - C, 88/88, .271/21/88/.371
7) Damian Rolls - 3B, 94/97, .323/13/73/.361 (135 games)
8) Rocco Baldelli - CF, 92/92, .276/18/78/.327
9) BJ Upton - SS, 93/97, .231/15/73/.333

Pitching (W-L/ERA):
1) Mike Weatherwax - 95/95, 16-13/4.45
2) Derek Lowe - 88/88, 14-14/4.02
3) Doug Waechter - 80/80, 15-10/4.62
4) Jorge Sosa - 82/82, 15-8/3.46
5) Chad Gaudin - 82/84, 9-11/5.37

Lance Carter was decent, saving 39 out of 47 with a 5.23 ERA

Prospects (not included in last update):
Greg Carballo - C, 20, 3rd round pick in this years draft, 64/94, .241/14/51/.309 in AAA (will not be up for 2-4 years)
Enrico Motolinia - SP, 19, 1st round pick in this years draft, 76/92, 8-3/4.39 in AAA (will most likely be in the starting rotation next year)
Robby Holm - RP, 19, 2nd round pick in last years draft, 105.2 innings, 74 hits, 111 K's, 3.91 ERA, 5 saves in 5 opportunities (will be in the bullpen either next year or the year after)

One note: BJ Upton won Rookie of the Year for 2006 :/

I'm very excited to see how this season goes. We won the division last year, but I'm almost positive that was a fluke so we'll see how this season goes. I really like the way the team is turning out. The first 3 guys in the order get on base a lot and steal a lot of bases, then we have 4 power guys, then the bottom 2 are the same as the top 3 and it repeats all over again. 1 Goal:

1. Go back to the playoffs

TRADE:
RED SOX get SP Jorge Sosa (we had 7 SP, we trade 1 and keep 1 in the bullpen), DEVIL RAYS get LF Carlos Ortega (#11 pick in draft, 93 contact 94 power already, will start next year because Crawford is a FA and is too expensive to re-sign) and $6 million

Line-up:
1) Jason Bourgeois - 2B, 25, 100/100
2) Damian Rolls - 3B, 29, 91/91
3) Carl Crawford - LF, 25, 96/96 (contract year)
4) Aubrey Huff - DH, 30, 97/98
5) Jonny Gomes - RF, 26, 95/100
6) Pete LaForest - C, 29, 88/88
7) Brad Hawpe - 1B, 27, 82/82
8) BJ Upton - SS, 22, 93/94
9) Rocco Baldelli - CF, 25, 92/92

Rotation (a few changes):
1) Mike Weatherwax - 25, 95/95
2) Derek Lowe - 36, 86/86 (contract year)
3) Seth McClung - 26, 82/90 (has been in the bullpen, now moves into rotation)
4) Chad Gaudin - 24, 82/82
5) Enrico Motolinia - 20, 76/90 (had a good first year in AAA so I moved him up)

Bullpen:
Closer: Lance Carter - 32, 81/81
Setup: Jesus Colome - 29, 83/86
Short: Danys Baez - 29, 84/84
Middle: Robby Holm - 20, 75/88 (same with Motolinia)
Long: Travis Harper - 30, 74/74
Alternate Starter: Doug Waechter - 26, 80/80 (was no longer a top 5 starter on my team, bottomline)

Prospects:
Carlos Ortega - LF, 22, 89/98 (#11 pick this year of Boston)
Andy Barroso - 3B, 23, 65/93 (#52 pick this year)
Greg Carballo - C, 21, 64/89 (#76 pick last year)
Jose Gamboa - 1B, 21, 64/94 (#22 pick this year)

Well, we started off the season a little slow, opening at 12-12, and on May 3 our ace Mike Weatherwax went down for 92 with severe elbow tendonitis, so everybody in the rotation was moved up a spot, Doug Waechter entered the rotation, and James Baldwin was signed to take over the alternate starter spot for a few months. We went on a hot streak and ended May 30-21, good enough for 2nd place, 2 1/2 games behind Boston. Carl Crawford has been excellent, but odds are he won't finish the season with Tampa because Carlos Ortega is tearing up AAA and we could get some GOOD talent for Crawford. By July 1 we were up to 47-29, 4.5 ahead of Boston in the division. The team was hitting .270 and the pitching had an ERA of 4.10, even without our ace (who is set to return in 33 days and will have a week or 2 of rehab time). By the trading deadline we were running away with the division with a 66-37 record that had us ahead of Boston by 13.5 games. Looking ahead to the future, we have 6 people in our line-up, 3 starters, and our closer with contracts expiring after the 2009 season (it is 2007 now). In the minors, we have players ready to fill 3 of those line-up spots. Carlos Ortega had been tearing up AAA with a .351 average, 28 homers, and an outstanding .516 OBP. Feeling he was ready for the majors, we called him up and traded Carl Crawford to MILWAUKEE for our SS of the future in Pablo Questi (25, 93/93, may be put into the line-up before 2010) and a future bullpen pitcher in Koremasa Arikawa (26, 73/80). Ortega was put into the line-up in the #3 spot, same as Crawford. On August 19, after two sub-par starts in AAA, Mike Weatherwax returned to the Devil Rays rotation. However, Seth McClung is out for 20 days with torn quadriceps so Baldwin stayed on the roster. By the time McClung was ready to return on September 8, we were 89-50, 16.5 games ahead of Boston and ready to clinch the division. Baldwin was sent down to AAA and will be released after the season. On September 25, Pete LaForest went down for 97 days with severe elbow tendonitis and missed the playoffs. Taking his spot was Brook Fordyce.

Overall record: 108-54 (27 games ahead of Boston hehehehe)

PLAYOFFS:
Division series vs. Cleveland (the team that took us out 3-1 last year):
Game 1: Devils Rays win 10-3 (with Weatherwax not available until Game 3, Derek Lowe took the mound and tossed 7 innings giving up just 2 runs)
Game 2: Indians win 8-6 (Jesus Colome gave up 3 runs in the top of the 10th and we could only get 1 back in the bottom)
Game 3: Indians win 4-1 (Despite 9 innings of 1 run baseball from Mike Weatherwax, it was tied at 1 after 9 and in the 10th Robby Holm gave up a 3-run homer to Victor Martinez to lose it)
Game 4: Indians win 7-6 (It's Deja-vu all over again...)

Disappointing finish to the season, but I feel good about where this team is right now)

World Series: Cubs beat Indians 4-1 (Somewhere Scorey is smiling...)

Batting (AVG/HR/RBI/SB/OBP):
1) Jason Bourgeois - 2B, 100/100, .280/12/64/18/.340
2) Damian Rolls - 3B. 96/96, .310/19/71/13/.371 (122 games)
3) Carlos Ortega - LF, 96/100, .257/6/38/2/.438 (59 games)
4) Aubrey Huff - DH, 100/100, .341/26/108/6/.425)
Wait until you see this one:
5) Jonny Gomes, RF, 100/100, .285/49/166/3/.390
6) Pete LaForest - C, 83/83, .274/22/84/5/.366

8) BJ Upton - SS, 100/100, .345/20/96/22/.346
9) Rocco Baldelli - CF, 92/92, .277/16/87/12/.320 (Contract year next year)

Rotation (W-L/ERA):
1) Mike Weatherwax - 25, 95/95, 8-6/3.78 (14 starts)
2) Derek Lowe - 33, 86/86, 17-7/3.71
3) Seth McClung - 26, 84/90, 12-5/3.93 (23 starts)

Long - Travis Harper - 30, 74/74, 2-1/3.18/73.2/72/0/0
Alternate Starter - Doug Waechter - 26, 80/80, 8-5/4.58/135/2/132/21 starts when Weatherwax and McClung were hurt

Prospects:
Andy Barroso - 3B, 23, 68/96. #52 overall this year, .277/24/82/9/.354
Greg Carballo - C, 21, 66/93, #76 overall last year, .229/18/68/5/.296
Jose Gamboa - 1B, 21, 74/100, #22 overall this year, may be in the starting line-up this year or during next year, .307/11/85/4/.359
Pablo Questi - SS, 25, 93/93, #20 overall in 2005, played in the majors in Milwaukee before being traded so only played 27 games in AAA, will most likely start at the end of next year and Upton will be traded

Re-signed:

Well, I'll tell you one thing: they signed Pedro and sent Maddux down to AAA :/

This year I expect to win at least 100 games. Last year we won 108 and I see no reason why we can't win 100 this year, even with an improved division.

We started off strong at 17-8 until Seth McClung went down for 26 days with torn quadriceps (Woody Williams came up from AAA to replace him, I knew it would be a good move). By the time McClung was ready to come back, we were 32-17, which put us 7 games ahead of Boston. We suffered a big loss on July 7 when Brad Hawpe tore a rotator cuff, sidelining him for 324 days. He's done for the season and the beginning of next. Luckily, Jose Gamboa has ripped up AAA and is up to 80/100. He will take Hawpe's place for the rest of this season and possible for good. However, on the 22nd, he went down for 74 days with a ruptured cervical disk. Tito Morton, a 30-year old 64/67 hitting over .300 in AAA last year was signed to fill the spot. Uh oh. By the trading deadline, we were 63-39 and the only team over .500 in the division. Gamboa will not be back for the rest of the regular season, but it looks like he will be back for the playoffs. Our goal was not met, BUT:

Overall record: 95-67 (16 games ahead of Boston)

Playoffs:
Division Series vs. Seattle (116 wins):
Game 1: Mariners win 3-1 (Gaudin started, Weatherwax will be ready for Game 2)
Game 2: Mariners win 9-7 (Weatherwax didn't have it, 4 ER in 5 innings)
Game 3: Mariners win 3-0 (3 and out, that hurt)

We'll be back and better next year (I hope)
