I'm starting to look at buying my first car, (actually, my mom's buying it for me) but it needs to be less then $15,000, be safe, and have enough room for me, it also needs to be reliable.

Well it depends if it's brand new your talking about.
Personally, I'd go with a 2002 or '03 Chevy Malibu. Especially the one's with a 3.1L, 191 V6. Definately stay away from the 3.8, since everything runs off the timing chain, you might be regreting it VERY soon. :D
The 02/03 Malibu's are a great mix of solid fuel economy, strong low end torque (Horsepower, baby! ;)), and a smooth ride.
As a suggestion, I would shy away from the ones with Satelitte tracking in them. I've heard a few horror stories about who can actually track you, and what it's being used for. ;)
Stick with the 01, 02, or 03 and you will not regret it.

dont get that onstar shiite either......it has a cellphone embedded for use as a mic.......onstar also has the power to unlock your doors not too mention the gps tracker.....also cars are coming with black boxes that record driving speeds and mileage

Not to jump on any conspiracy bandwagon, but I've heard about that "Black Box" thing as well.
Some guy rolled up to a gas station to buy his gas, and had his card rejected because there were $1600 in fee's on it.

Too expensive to buy a new car. I like this car.
I'm looking at used cars.

Thats what I did first. My friend is in critical condition right now from a motorcycle crash. He hit a car, flew into the car, and then into a tree. He hit a firefighters car thank god, and was treated at the scene. Within half an hour he was on a helicopter, otherwise he probobly would have died.
I'm never going to ride a motorcycle, drive a sports car, or a small car.
I've ruled my choices down to full size American Sedans... Lincoln LS, Mercury Grand Marquis, Lincoln Town Car, and Ford Crown Victoria. I would have a Chrysler 300 on that list, but they cost too much.

Yeah, my mom hydroplaned in her explorer and spun around 920 degrees. She was going 55 MPH and the only thing for damage was the front fender and the back fender and a broker tail-light.

A question to think about. If you buy a tank like that, wouldn't you be contributing more to the whole "Bush-Saudi" conspiracy? If you talk the talk, you got to walk the walk. You can buy new and still be uder 15,000. My friend likes Ford Focuses (He's got 2 a zx3 and an SVT) he loves them. I'm sure a Honda Civic can't be much more than 15.

But you never answered my question. You would be contributing to the things you hate the most. You can't have it both ways. Either you go full on 100% or you, for a lack of a better phrase, give in. I mean, I can cry that I haven't won the lottery yet, but I also don't play the lottery, so I shouldn't complain. You know what I mean? Drive a Prius, save the world.

i believe in the freedom to drive what ya want....i have a mustang....
i'm no green party.... tree hugging ......gaia worshipping enviro wack-o.....theres plenty of oil out there thats why they are seizing middle east oil fields
....with the suppressed technologies out there .....hydrogen....electric...... solar....whatever high tech propulsion systems that i couldnt even fathom.....one problem....there is no profit in alternative fuels.....thats why we still drive petroleum powered internal combustion engines.....so i say drive what ya want or can afford

OK, let me get this right then. You have no problem putting down your 20 or 25 bucks (depending on where you live) to fill the tank with gas KNOWING FULL WELL WHERE THAT MONEY IS GOING TO? You see, I look at that as a contradiction. If I buy a new computer, one that I know did not get good reviews, how can I justify complaining about it when I know the PC stunk? OK, back in March or April the gas prices started going through the roof. I was sick and tired of paying 100-120 a week on my gas guzzler (an Xterra) Instead of saying "that's the nature of the beast" I did something about it and got one that's a lot better (a Mazda 3) I was actually going to get the Escape hybrid, but my wife hitting somthing on the road nessesitated and quicker solution. The Esacapes are supposed to come out this fall, but just couldn't wait. So you see, if you REALLY believe that the oil thing is out of hand, get something better on gas. If you thing Prius owners are just tree huggers, or whatever you said, you could always try like the Neon SRT. It's plenty fast, and although I'm not a big fan of them, you seem like the type that likes to take people out on occasion (like I do) you could have the best of both worlds. There are 2 types of people at a game; ones who watch, cheer, complain, and WISH they were out there, and those who ARE out there.

Only 20 or 25 to fill it? Filling the SUV's of the family ranges from $36 to $50 every time.

no, no, no filling the Mustang that he has. I think the Xterra has an 18 gallon tank. Of course, you never let it get down too far but I think I maxed out at $30 one time. The truck doesn't require Super, and if it doesn't require it, you don't put it in.

The safety ratings are only relevent to cars within 250 lbs of the tested weight. The car companies like it because they can compare the safety rating of a VW Bug to a Ford Crown Victoria.

I think you missed my point. What I meant was smaller cars have a couple of advantages. 1 usually, they stop better. I don't have numbers, but I'm sure they are better than most. 2, they handle better. I love taking offramps with the person in an Explorer thinking he's driving a Ferrari and wasting him. So if let's say there's a "panic stop" on the highway (happened to me today) you can stop better, plus, if nessesary, you can manuver you way out. Getting out of a situation is WAY better than getting hit. The best way is to avoid it, obviously. So technically, you could have a car with the worst rating and if you never get hit, the point is moot.

Well yeah. But a bigger car is better to be in if you can't avoid an accident, especially in New England where it is best to have a heavy car that grips the road. If a car can't stop, hits you on the side in an intersection, its much better to be in a large car. Large cars are also safer when ones car makes contact with a tree at high speeds. Have you ever been on Route 2? The trees are 8 feet away from the highway and they are huge. The worst stretch of Route 2 is the hill right after going through leominster between Westminster, though its been improved by my congressman and his pork barrel project:D But there is no breakdown lane.

ha ha..my boss just today got a ticket on route 2!! There are problems with the big car theory. First, how many trees are you planning on hitting? I've been driving since 1987 and I havent hit one yet (knock on wood) Second, that car your looking at is rear wheel drive. Ever drive one in snow? You wished you hadn't. Beyond awful. Some even say front wheel drive is better than 4 wheel drive, but I don't buy that. That car also doesn't have any kind of traction control. That car you picked is maybe the worst snow car there is.

Well, you never know, there are only 2 lanes to maneuver in. All trucks and SUV's are rear wheel drive with an option of 4 wheel drive. I think that the Crown Victoria is heavy enough to stay in the snow, the same way a Mercedes is.

nooooo when you get a house loan from your local bankster ....the bank can lend out 90% of deposits....so if you put in $100 the bank can legaly lend out $900...this is money out of nothing......now when you borrow say 100k of fractional reserve money from the bank.....you are paying the bank back full face value + interest......only flaw in this system is that since the bank is only liable to keep 10% in the bank to satisfy daily business......if 15-20% wanted there money out of the bank the bank would go bankrupt.......every car, house, and other big purchase loans and credit card debt is all created money out of debt....and we are in debt up to our eyeballs ....did you read that article a few posts back?

well, if that's the case, be prepared to rent all your life, which mean you will pay someone so they can pay their mortgage. Also, be prepared to own used cars all you life which means you will have no idea what that car went through before you own it. Now in some cases, be prepared to let that used car nickel and dime you to death. Mufflers, calipers, starters, timing belt/chain. Hope you good with a wrench!!

Actually some people do have the resources AND the patience to wait until they have enough money saved up to actually PAY for something...I know that is contrary to the American way now...but nevertheless some people are truly "old school" :)

Car crashes are car accidents
Drive-bys are intentional.
Thats how the gun haters look at it.
Also, most car accidents can be prevented by people NOT eating, talking on their cell phone, or doing something else.
