View Full Version : Scorey and RC2's Universe - RELEASE 1
RotoChamp2
10-11-2004, 10:09 PM
Well, after many months of looking at porn and occassionally working on our universe, we are proud to present the first full release of Scorey and RotoChamp's Mogul Universe!
You'll need to rename the file to "Universe" without the quotes of course.
Since a readme file didn't work so well last time, a few things to note:
Pitching Prospects are all rated
Hitting prospects are all rated
Existing hitters and pitchers have been re-rated to account for new growth/decline curves. This is what we call 20/20 hindsight :D
Salaries are all updated
Cities information is the same as the last release, but different from those released with the actual game by Sports Mogul.
Where players are still under arbitration, we did the research to determine how many more years the players have until their respective team loses the rights to control their contract and gave them this many years under contract. Example: Guillermo Mota will be eligible for FA following the 2006 season and so his Mogul contract is at the current rate through 2006.
All added prospects have 6 years @ 300K/year contracts.
Beyond all that, here's a few other things to note:
We've tried to build players so that they'll peak at certain levels, around certain ages. Beyond that work, we have no control over whether a player reaches the "projected" peak that we've set. The game's engine controls all of that. For best results here, play in Simulation Mode.
If you notice issues with the universe feel free to let us know in this thread. Be gentle...Scorey's fragile.
If anyone wishes to argue a player's rating, please do the following:
a) Go into Commish mode and take a look at Projected 2004 stats AND projected peak stats.
b) Do a little research and be able to backup your claim. I have no problem reviewing the ratings I've done, but I don't want to have to spend time going back through all of my notes if you've done no leg work and are basing your opinion off of the hometown newspaper reports. No offense to writers, but that's what they are: writers...not scouts, not front office folks, etc. I base the projections off of scouting reports and a ton of statistical analysis.
Players who project as utility guys or who can play multiple positions are not easy to setup in the game and so we've put them at positions where they might best project. For pitchers this means that some guys who are starting in the minors currently may end up having low endurance in the game b/c I've projected them as relievers/closers. I would've had to rate some of those guys lower if I set them up as starters. A good example of why is Eric Gagne. Go check out his numbers as a starter and then take a look at the moderate success  he's had as a closer.
EDIT
Any players who started the year on the DL are injured in the game for as long as they were in the regular season. In cases like Preston Wilson, who never should've come off the DL, I left him injured for the entire season. Also, some guys pitched in like three games before being knocked out for the year, so they're injured as well.

Sorry, I meant to say 2005 above...Can you tell I'm already past 2004? :D
To delete those players, go to League > Options and check "Commisioner Mode"
Then go to each player you want to delete, pull up their player card and hit Edit Player. Once you're in the Edit Player dialogue there's a button called "delete player"

Bravo gentleman, take a bow! Great work, take a week off before you get back to work on the patches ;) lmao j/k
Just looking over my Jays and I was wondering why the minor league prospect pitchers don't have any predicted/peak Win or Loss records?

I downloaded the file and tried to put it in the correct folder, and replace my old universe but it wont allow me because it is a different kind of document than the old universe. Also even when i drag the old universe out of the folder and just use the new one, the rosters still are not fixed. Any help will be appreciated, thanks.
EDIT: fixed it nevermind.

Oh, I gotcha...ok, so do this then:
1) Start a brand new game
2) Delete the players you want gone, but make NO other changes
3) Save the game with a save type of Universe and a name of "Universe"
You've now updated your version of the universe.

This comes up named "attachment" and it is I think a DAT file, not a Universe file.
I cannot seem to get it to work. Usually you guys make it as a universe. Or am I just a *****. That's possible.
Please advise and thanks again for the great work!!!

Yes, I did miss that, sorry. I normalized everyone out to 0W-0L-0Sv on purpose. It hasn't affected anyone's W-L-Sv record so far as I've noticed, and after the first season the game's engine will then predict the records for upcoming seasons.

A Universe file is a DAT file...All you should have to do is save this to your Sports Mogul > BBM2K5 directory with the name Universe (back up your old universe file first). Then start a new game and select "Don't Load Stats".

Ah, good question. I forgot to mention this in my notes....I'll go back and edit them in:

I think maybe Mark Redman should be made a little better ... I simmed the remainder of his contract 3 times and he never touched the majors, stuck behind Harden and Blanton. Your predictions for his '04 performance are very accurate (60/100 bb/k, 4.15 ERA is even .50 better than he actually did), but I think maybe based on past performance he should be bumped a little.
04 predicted ... 4.15 ERA, 64 bb, 104 k, .276 OPP OBA
03 ... 3.59 ERA, 61 bb, 151 k, .231 OPP OBA
02 ... 4.21 ERA, 51 bb, 109 k, .257 OPP OBA
I think maybe a 4.15 ERA, 60 bb, 120 k, .250 OPP OBA would improve his 68 rating to somewhere around mid-upper 70s, where he should be.
Sorry to nitpick -- great roster
EDIT -- I tried changing his ratings to what I said before and he did indeed get put into the Oakland rotation, finishing '04 with a 4.43 ERA, 54 bb / 83 k, .251 OPP OBA in 27 starts ... similar data in 05/06.

B.K Kims endurance is at a 22. I know he pitched mostly relief but was a starter for a bit. I think his endurance should be in the 40-50's.

Well...I've been thinking...next season with Mogul 2K6 I'll set it up like this...1 password protected (this feature disables commish mode) universe 2K6 will cost you 9.95...10 dollars less than the game....(let's face it...the game sucks without good rosters ;) )....1 regular universe 2K6 with the password (you can access commish mode) will cost you 19.95...same price of the game + the ability to use the universe and edit it as you wish!
[B]There will be a limit of 250 copies of the universe.
I will apply for a copyright on the custom made roster to prevent file sharing. :)
I will also apply for a patent on the name of the universe (Scorey's or...Scorey &RC2's BBM Universe 2K6...depending if RC2 will help next season)
Each minor update will cost an additional 1.95
Each major update will cost an additional 4.95
With these costs...There have to be promises...I understand that....and here's the benefit....If you're happy with this seasons universe you will definitely be looking forward to a new one in next seasons game. I will go ahead and promise you now that one will be available....It will be set up on a schedule of release dates that will be set up at the beginning....If I do not meet a deadline...each time the price is lowered by 10%...The delivery of the file will much quicker than this season...(money talks ;) )....More prospects than this season...instead of the top 15...I'll have the top 20...maybe 25....(As far as I know Clay is anticipating expanding the rosters)....and maybe a few surprises..you never know...
sign-ups start next Monday...reserve your copy today....:)

what considers as minor and major updates though?
you'll be racking in $5000 bucks, which brings me to a question
honestly, how many hours you spend making this roster?
is Clay goning to even let you do this? or maybe he'll spend more time and do it himself?
many questions pop straight out of my head,
but one thing for sure, I'm not going to pay $20US (I'm canadian) for a game, just to pay another $20US for a roster update
I guess you can call it, thinking on our side of things.

We did spend a ton of time on it. Speaking for myself, researching 450 prospects to identify growth potential, growth rate, etc. took a ton of time. Plus I was able to leverage work I'd already done for the RotoChamps website to adjust existing player projections.
Beyond that, I'm not likely to be involved in creating a universe next season. As we continue to ramp up the offerings on RotoChamps, we expect to see more and more time wrapped up in running the site. I'm sure I'll continue to be a follower of the game and what not, but unless RotoChamps (as a company) was serving in some official capacity with SportsMogul, I can't imagine that I will have the time to present. That said, I understand Scorey's done an excellent job on his own in the past and I'm sure he'll continue the excellent work if he chooses to go forward with further universes (or perhaps it's "universi"?).

First, I'd like to say, great universe, but I've seen my first problem, Mike Gonzalez (RP , Pirates) is awful in the game, but in real life, He had a a sub 2.00 ERA ( It was 1.62 I think), and he had 50+ K's in 42 innings. And Salomon Torres had a 3.00-ish ERA, but in the Universe, under predicted, he has a 4+ ERA.
Oh, and Brian Boehringer was out the majority of the year. Other than that, it looks very good

As far as the projections go, Clay mentioned in a previous article that the projections are utilized by the engine as a conservative projection, meaning that in a given year a player may exceed or fall short of the projection.
In Torres case, I just went in and tested, using the supporting numbers he had this year and it actually lowered his rating. ERA doesn't mean a whole lot in terms of projection. His hit rate was greatly improved this year, but with a falling K rate all that means is that he got luckier...i.e. less balls put in play fell for hits. He also improved his walk rate, but not to a degree that figures to hold....to be honest, I root for Torres, but he's 32 years old and on the wrong side of his growth curve.
Boehringer didn't hit the DL until June 2nd, meaning that he made it through 2 months of the season...I felt that was enough to justify leaving him active.
As for Gonzalez...he's something of an enigma. He had ridiculous numbers this season and nothing in his history to suggest he can keep it up. That said, I improved his numbers for the next update...he's just someone I overlooked. But he had a 55K:6BB ratio this year, but control's always been a big issue with him. Coming into the year, he'd only pitched 12 innings at Triple-A and throughout his career exhibited something more along the lines of a 2K:1BB ratio. I expect that this season was little more than your typical relief year...not a lot of guys got to see him this, his first season. I expect that his Walk Rate will increase next year which will also bring up the Hit Rate and normalize his ERA. I did fix his K's though, which were way off.

1. A minor update could be like a weeks worth of transactions.
2. A major update could be something like a months worth of transactions.
3. How many hours...hmmm...let's just say too many to count...
4. I have doubts about Clay doing this himself...and I have ideas about making the process faster and for things to be released on time and accurate...I don't think he wants to mess with it.
5. Realistically...I am thinking 5 bucks would be quite a fair charge...for unlimited access all season long...let's face it...how many of you are willing to use the rosters that come with the game all season long?

Exactly...a TON of time was spent by RC2 researching and coming up with predicted stats and well as peak predicted stats...Probaby many more hours than he would have liked...There is also a TON of time spent researching rosters and transactions and creating prospects...coming up with accurate salaries....coming up with accurate city and stadium information....and on and on...I think there is a demand out there for this type of thing...and it would behoove Clay to check into it...I am willing to do the work...and if RC2 is willing...use his info to implement once again...Let's face it...the quality of this seasons universe file is unmatched by any previous version with the addition of RC2 to the project this season.

Heh, okay, the Jason Bay projection was about right on, so were the Wilsons.
The reason for Gonzalez sudden burst, the thing about his minor league history is that for most of his minor league career, he was a starter, I think they just converted him to a reliever last year, and this year in Triple-A, he dominated, but the Pirates, dumbly, didn't use him as the AAA closer, they gave that job to the horrible Mark Corey(Who's now gone, thank goodness.)

I get your point about the hours and such,
adding all the price and stuff, i'd be looking at $45US, which can get me a decent EA Sports Baseball thinge..
u know what i'm talking about, i just dun't know, i could be wrong but it's still quite pricy ...
what if you include it with Clay's game each year, and make a portion of the income there, like make it 40bux for the whole game and your roster thinge

Yeah, I realize that he was a starter...but control is control. Also, it's very common that projected relievers spend the majority of their minor league careers as starters. Doing so gets them more innings and, thus, more experience. Regardless, I'm not surprised by the monster year. Take a look at a guy like Mateo for the M's last season...first exposure to the league, ridiculous K:BB rate, great supporting numbers throughout. The thing with relievers is that their sample sets are so small year-to-year that it's really quite tough to predict, as one bad outing can make or break their ERA, WHIP, etc. Like I said, I bumped him up a bit but I don't expect that kind of performance to be his norm.

i cannot find any info on him Ah, well as we mentioned in the first release...there are three players we've added in for each of myself, Scorey, and RotoChamp1. McDermott is RC1 and I'm on Seattle as Joey Knish. Both names are characters from one of the greatest movies ever, Rounders.
There's also Frank Riccard (Scorey), who plays on the Cubbies. That's Will Ferrell's character on Old School...also known as Frank the Tank.
See earlier posts in this thread regarding how to delete those players out of the universe if you'd like for them to not be there.

For the next update, could you have SP Andy Pettite and SP Wade Miller for the Astros and Mark Prior and Kerry Wood of the Cubs miss however many days they were injured this season?
Trying to play as the Cardinals kind of sucks when Larry Walker is injured at the start of the season but other teams have all their players healthy... ;)
Chris Carpenter for the Cards also missed some time, but the four SPs I mentioned above had absences that were just as prolific as Walker's... And if there's some way to have Kevin Brown miss time for a broken hand... :D

He definately deserves to be out for some time. He's a ***** for doing it and hopefully won't be on the Yankees next year. That being said, he's been great when he's been in :)

While I can't say I'd mind paying the $5 charge for an updated universe, having a password protected one for you to edit costing an extra $20 is a bit much. The game doesn't have MLBPA and the other licenses to keep it cheap, and by charging that much you'd really defeat the purpose. While I do love your work, I just can't see myself and many others paying that much extra for updated rosters. Maybe you can work something out with Clay and get the standard price of 2K6 up to $25 or $30 if somehow you get under contract with him to provide updated rosters for everyone. Otherwise honestly, I'd pay the $20 and use someone else's rosters that would be available for free. I see Mogul as a $20 game with heavy free support from fellow owners, and I really can't see myself spending a lot more for updated rosters. I understand that it's a lot of work to get the rosters perfect, but having them cost as much or more than the game itself just seems crazy to me.

I'd first like to say, awesome universe. Truely awesome. I can't state how much I love this universe. You guy's should be getting payed $20 bucks for every download.
I'd second like to say, if you guys charge next year, I'll have to make my own. Not truely awesome. :(. Which I should probably be getting charged $20 bucks for every download.

I was wondering if I am doing this right. Now forgive me, I am absoluttely terrbile with computers. How can I get the universe into the Baseball Mogul 2005 file? I tried putting it on my desktop and then dragging it onto the BBM2K5 icon and that didn't work. I would appreciate the help. =)

put it in the same folder as the program,
rename it to Universe.dat but remember to back up the original one
and start game, change it from 2004 to Don't Load Stats..and have fun there,
side note, there'll be 3 crazyly good players that the creater added since they made this Universe so they can do that, if you want to delete it, go to commisoner mode, edit the players and delete them,
2 are from Seattle, 1 from the Cubs,
you can easily spot them with the 24 year contract and all
swamilee
10-20-2004, 09:22 AM
I don't delete them, I just release them and let some other team pay them $20million per year as a free agent. Maybe I'll make them a "D" health also so it's a risk. Nothing wrong with some extra players, but not with 24 year contracts at $300,000 and they're 100s!

I can't set the ticket prices for any team....When you start up a new game with the universe file the computer AI determines the ticket prices for ALL teams but the one you control.

I did a test sim on ALL 30 teams on Mogul level and there were 2 teams that sold out every game...the Cubs and Redsox (which is pretty accurate given the size of their stadiums). All other teams were pretty much spot on also.

No pressure, I am loving the release and therefore, the game too. Just making small talk.

thanks Well, I've made some minor updates as far as player ratings go, but we'll be waiting until some free agent movement happens before doing another release. There really haven't been enough changes in the game to warrant another release at this point. And we can't just drop all the FA's into the FA pool, as it'll only hold a certain amount. (I think 70 in each).

I've got BBM 2003. Is there any way to get the latest roster/universes to work with that?
I was able to do that with the 2004 universes. I got the demo, loaded them into 2004, and saved as a 2003 file.
With the 2005 demo, I can't load any of the custom rosters. Is there any way around this? I'm not trying to get around having to pay for BBM2005, but I'm happy with 2003, just want to be able to tap into the updated rosters.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Thanks. I'm not sure, but we're not advocating use of the universe with any version besides BBM2K5. This is for a couple of reasons:
1) We haven't tested the universe with any other version.
2) We strongly advocate puchasing the newest version and supporting Clay and team.

There are many ways around this, but honestly get $20 and buy the new game, it is 10X better than 2k3. Even 2k4 is better than 2k3.....
Custom roster you might be out of luck, just the player database, i believe there might be an updated roster that is for 2k2/3/4
just browse it, check for yourself....:)

Updated stats and rosters are one reason to buy the new game each season. If you have the 2003 game you will not be able to use a 2k5 universe file or the new 2k6 universe file when it comes out in the spring. Support the company and buy the game each season. :)

How do I move players so that they are on their original teams? I want to keep all of Scorey and RC's hard work, but on April 1, for example, I want Josh Phelps on Toronto, not Cleveland, where he wasn't traded until August.
It's probably something really obvious, but I can't figure out how to do it short of releasing each player, then signing him with each team, then editing the contract.

Using Scorey and Rotochamps original universe, I updated it. Note: I did NOT change any player ratings. It includes:
1) Most injuries have been taken away, as these rosters are to reflect the 2005 season, not 2004 (however, some injuries I know are to continue until next season, so I left them in. I'm sure I missed some, though)
2) All free agent signings
3) All free agents
I don't have enough time to take 1 year off of everybody's contracts, so if somebody could do that it would be great. The only probably that comes out of this not happening is that there won't be any free agents in the first off season you have (or a minimal amount). Enjoy!

Here's an updated roster from the ones being posted recently.
I changed starting year to 2005. Added in new salaries, most new transactions, and I also changed the ages (+1 for each player), and took one year off each contract for existing players.
I would like to add these at some point (or someone can do them for me :) ) :
-import 2004 stats
-continue on roster changes
