The Milwaukee Brewer Dynasty

I have decided, that to keep me occupied in the off-season, I will start a Milwaukee Brewer Dynasty. I plan to go for at least 15-20 years. The game will be on Mogul difficulty and in simulation mode. I have decided to write this dynasty from my point of view. Now to start the game…
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well the Brewers have had 12 straight seasons without a playoff berth and they are becoming desperate to begin a new era. So, they interview three men to become GMs of the Milwaukee Brewers and the winner is Jack Randolph, a 30 year old scout for the Brewers. He was recommended by old Brewer’s GM Doug Melvin who retired after last season. “I am thrilled to become GM of this organization. To tell you the truth, ever since I followed baseball as a youngster this job has been a dream job for me.”

A slight layout of how I want to build this team-

Lineup
1-High on base percentage who can steal at least 40-50 stolen bases a year.
2-Decent average hitter who can get on base
3-My best hitter who has 80’s or higher in almost every hitting category
4-My raw power hitter
5-2nd best combination hitter on the team
6-Another pure power hitter
7-High average with at least 80 in speed
8-Usually a catcher who can’t hit

I would like to have 80 or higher range rating all through the middle. (C 2B SS CF) Everyone else better have at least a 75 in every fielding category.

My Short-term (2004) Goals:
*Win 70-75 games
*Maintain a profit
*Develop a nucleus to build around
*Attract over 2 million fans to home games this year

My Long-term Goals:
*Improve by five games every year
*Make playoffs in four years or less
*Improve every year
*Keep a respectable payroll

I have decided that I want to acquire a mid tier starting pitcher that is young enough to be in our future plans. So I went out and searched the league for a pitcher that could have a respectable ERA and win 10-12 games for me. In the end I found Tim Redding who is only 26 and hasn’t reached his full potential. Redding is at the end of his contract so starting the day we get him I will begin negotiations with him. We traded away 2b Junior Spivey to get him, unfortunately Spivey never played a game with us, but we have Keith Ginter who is a respectable player. This trade brought us down to 26.9 and I have the limit is 28.7 so I have about 1.8 million I can spend. Now I am going to go out and search for either a 3b or OF so that I can add depth to my team. I found a quality 3b in Mark Derosa of the Braves. I spoke to their GM and he said that they were interested in Curt Leskanic. I quickly took that offer and the trade happened with me receiving Derosa and them getting a quality RP in Leskanic. My payroll is now at 24.9 million and I have decided to save the money for negotiations during the season.

April 2004- WELCOME TO MILWAUKEE!!

Breakdown: Well in month number one of my regime we go 10-13. Not bad but nothing to be proud of either! On the hitting side Brooks Kieschnik has really stepped up. He is hitting .346 with 6 homers and 14 RBI. On the pitching side Doug Davis has really stepped up and has an ERA of 3.56 and is 2-1.

Right now we have $5.9 million in cash. Our projected revenue is 45.6, and our projected total expenses are $41.2 million.

May 2004- Can we improve??

Breakdown: This month was a tad better. We went 13-14 and we are now 23-27. Brooks Kieschnik has 14 homers now and 41 RBI. Doug Davis has a 3.09 ERA with a 5-1 record and is continuing to improve. Jayson Durocher is our new closer as Danny Kolb moves into the Setup slot.

Right now we have $6.4 million in cash. Our projected revenue is $44.3 million, and our projected expenses are $40.3 million.

June 2004- This month will define our season.

Breakdown: We continue to improve. We had our first .500 month as we went 13-12 and our record is 36-39. We are 6 behind in the wild card race as of now and 11 back of the division lead. Brooks Kieschnik cooled down this month and is hitting .289 with 19 homers and 58 RBI. Doug Davis got hit a little harder and has a 4.35 ERA and a record of 6-4. Tim Redding is having a down year with a 5.47 ERA and a 4-6 record. Mark DeRosa is hitting .293 with 10 homers and is having a good season with us.

Right now we have $6.7 million in cash. Our projected revenue is $43.5 million and our projected expenses are $40 million.

July 2004- Anyone up for a break?

Breakdown: We continue to stay in contention having another .500 month going 14-14. We are now 8 back of the wild card. Kieschnik was our lone all star. He has 27 homers with 77 RBI. His average is down to .279. On the pitching side, Jayson Durocher is 8-11 on save opportunities and has earned an extension. We resigned him for 2 years at $3.1 million. We may trade him in the off season for something cheaper.

Right now we have $7.3 million in cash. Our projected revenue is $43.4 million, and our projected expenses are $41.3 million.

August 2004- The DOG days of August.

Breakdown: We had a terrible month and a 8-19 record which brought our overall record to 58-72. Kiesch has 35 homers and 95 RBI and is really making a run at MVP. Who would have thought that Brooks Kieschnik would have a chance at MVP!

Right now we have $7.3 million in cash. Our projected revenue is $43.5 million and our projected expenses are $39.8 million.

September/October 2004- DOWN THE STRETCH WE COME!!

Breakdown: Well we had a really bad second half. Our final record was 69-93 one win short of what we were aiming for. Kiesch ended up with 42 homers and 117 RBI. I am sad to say that we have to offer him a contract or let him go. I am probably going to let him walk and we will get a cheaper mid tier RFer.

We ended up with $7.9 million in cash. Our revenue was $43.5 million, and our expenses ended up being $40.3 million. We gained $3.1 million over the year.

How did we do on our goals-

My Short-term (2004) Goals:
*Win 70-75 games
*Maintain a profit
*Develop a nucleus to build around
*Attract over 2 million fans to home games this year

*Win 70-75 games –FAILED: We ended up only winning 69 games but improved over last years record.
*Maintain a profit –ACCOMPLISHED: We made $3.1 million in cash this year.
*Develop a nucleus to build around –FAILED: We really never found anyone in our pitching staff or lineup that we could build around. Possibly could be Scotty Po who hit .307 with 37 SBs.
*Attract over 2 million fans to home games this year –FALED: We almost made it but we had 1,948,732 walk through the gates. SOO CLOSE!!

TRADE WIRE
I have gone to the trading block and I am searching for a starting pitcher similar to Tim Redding but cheaper. I was really bummed we had to let him go and I am sure I have a lot of fans raving about that trade since we received nothing out of that deal. There still may be a chance we get Redding back though…My assistant and searched and finally found someone. We traded away Danny Kolb for Ryan Dempster with the Chicago Cubs. He will be the #2 starter behind Sheets. We will find our other SP in FA. I now look to find a catcher or RF that won’t cost me too much. We ended up trading with Baltimore for BJ Surhoff. We traded away RP Luis Vizcaino who was making $3 million. We also traded away Jayson Durocher for another bullpen arm in Chad Harville. Sold Wes Helms to Baltimore for $1 million.

FREE AGENT WIRE
Well we are looking at another starting pitcher. We may end up adding bullpen depth through FA also. We have a payroll of 27.5 million. That should be able to go over $32 million range. I want to be able to increase payroll a little every year. We have signed Tony Armas Jr. to a $5.4 million contract for 4 years. We will use him as a #1 starter this season. We also signed Trevor Hoffman for 2.4 million dollars for 2 years.

THE DRAFT
Round 1 – SP Carlos Aquino [81/93]; will be in rotation as a 5th starter.
Round 2 – RP Neil Hoyal [73/79]; will be in bullpen
Round 3 – RF Nick Cooper [65/74]
Round 4 – SP Peter Shue [63/81]
Round 5 – SP Don Usher [62/76]
Round 6 – SP Don Licha [62/76]

The rest of the off season went uneventfully and we have gone into spring training. 1B prospect Prince Fielder has a chance to win a job if he performs to what we want him to. Throughout Spring Training the Prince hit .250 with no homers and only 5 RBI in 32 AB. We have decided to have him start off at AAA but he will most likely be up within a month or two.

My Short-Term Goals (2005):
*Win 75-80 games
*Maintain positive cash
*Keep team young
*Attract 2 million fans this year

I feel I have everything I need for this year in place. As of now the only untouchable player on this team for trades is Ben Sheets. Scott Podsednik is available and I may trade him away if needed to. Right now I like our rotation a lot and it really could keep us in contention throughout most of the year. Our offense will struggle but should score enough runs for our staff. Here is my 25-man roster for 2005:

Lineup
Podsednik, Scott CF [81/81]
Derosa, Mark 3b [79/79]
Overbay, Lyle 1b [79/79]

April 2005- Welcome 2005!!

Breakdown: We started out 2-10 but we ended up 8-15. Halfway through the month we had to sign Felipe Lopez the SS for 1.9 million for 4 years. Bill Hall is out for the rest of the year with a torn knee ligament. Scott Podsednik is hitting .370 with 10 extra base hits. On the pitching side as a team are struggling with an ERA of 5.74.

Right now we have $8.3 million in cash. Our projected revenue is $37.9 million, and our projected expenses are $45.1 million.

May 2005- Let’s hope for a better month.

Breakdown: We ended up going 12-15 this month. This was a better record than last month but our overall record gets worst and drops to 20-30. Podsednik continues to hit well at .366 with 5 homers and 9 stolen bases. Our pitching got a little better and the ERA came down to 5.42. Tony Armas Jr. is 6-2 with a 3.44 ERA but our bullpen is all over 5 ERA other than two people.

Right now we have $7.6million in cash. Our projected revenue is $38.8 million, and our projected expenses are $43.4 million.

June 2005- Can we continue to improve?

Breakdown: We had a really good month going 18-10 and getting back into the hunt. Pitching was great; the ERA came down to 4.94! We are now 38-40 and we are 6 back of the wild card. If our pitching continues to improve we may give the teams in our League a run for their money! Catcher Chad Moeller has 10 homeruns with a .306 average. He has improved dramatically since last year. I am really happy I didn’t sign a catcher over the off season.

Right now we have $7 million in cash. Our projected revenue is $39.8 million, and our projected expenses are $44.6 million.

July 2005- Any trades this month? Maybe…

Breakdown: Well we have lost Podsednik for the rest of the season. We still had a winning month at 12-10 and we got back to .500 with a 52-52 record. Our pitching struggled a little bringing its ERA back up to 5.07. We have brought up Prince Fielder in place for Podesednik.

Right now we have $7.8 million in cash. Our projected revenue is $39.8 million, and our projected expenses are $44.1 million.

August 2005- The DOG days of August—can we stay in contention?

Breakdown: Well we came back down to earth with a 12-16 record. Our overall record is 64-68 now. Fielder has started out hot with a .302 batting average and 14 rbi in just 30 games. He only has one homerun though. The one thing we are missing is a good bullpen. They have lost us at least 10 games this year and with a decent bullpen we would still be in the race I think.

Right now we have $7 million in cash. Our projected revenue is $41.5 million, and our projected expenses are $44 million.

September/October 2005-AND DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME!!

Breakdown: We ended up with a 78-84 record. Prince slowed down a bit and hit .259 on the season with only 2 home runs. He did have 11 doubles though. We had two pitchers with 15 or more wins in Tony Armas Jr. and Ben Sheets with 16 and 15 respectively.

We ended up with $6.9 million in cash and we ended up with revenue of $42.1 million. Our expenses added up to $44.1 million, so we didn’t lose as much as expected.

O.K., this off season I am going to take a little differently…In my first post I posted how I wanted to build this team. I actually am going to make a lot more reference to that. Here is the layout:

Lineup
1- High on base percentage who can steal at least 40-50 stolen bases a year.
2- Decent average hitter who can get on base
3- My best hitter who has 80’s or higher in almost every hitting category
4- My raw power hitter
5- 2nd best combination hitter on the team
6- Another pure power hitter
7- High average with at least 80 in speed
8- A catcher with good “D” and him being able to hit would be a bonus

Here is an outlook of my lineup right now:
1- Scott Podsednik: OBA-.393 22-38 SBs (Injured half the year)
2- Felipe Lopez: .250 average with an on base of .330
3- Lyle Overbay: I really would like to improve here. Overbay hit .306 with only 11 homeruns. Overbay would be a good 6th or even 2nd hitter.
4- Geoff Jenkins: Hit 38 homers with 135 RBI. Definitely alright here.
5- Keith Ginter: I would like to improve here too. Ginter is a 6th-7th hitter at best. Rickie Weeks could be a good 5th hitter when he steps in.
6- NOONE: Really no one here consecutively this season. This is where I would like to have another power hitter.
7- Mark Derosa: May be better fit for the 2nd hole with Overbay replacing him here.
8- Chad Moeller: Will be moved up to sixth this season and Felipe Lopez is likely to be moved here.

In the defensive category we definitely need to get better. Through the middle I want to have all 80-90 defensive ratings. (C SS CF)

Off Season Needs:
*2b who can hit fifth or third
*RF who can hit fifth or third
*Bullpen help

• First thing we did was surprise everyone and go out and sign RF Bobby Higginson for 3 years at 4.3 million a year
• We completed a trade for Derrick Turnbow by trading away Bobby Higginson, Scotty Po, and Pete Shue.
• We signed LF Darnell Stenson for $5.1 million a year over 4 years. He will play in left with Jenks in right and bat 5th.

I have decided that I will have Weeks bat third in the lineup and have him develop there. I wanna trade away some players with money because as of now we have a payroll of 45 million dollars!! Eek!! I am currently $14 million over the budget. We traded away Matt Ford who was making $1.2 a year for $1 million in cash to Boston. I then traded away Felipe Lopez for Kahlil Greene who is a defensive specialist. Felipe Lopez was making almost $2 million a year. The last trade I made was trading away Chad Moeller to the White Sox for Mark Guthrie the relief pitcher.

Draft:

Round 1 – RP Keith Kane [77/97]; will be in AAA this year to get ready to be a closer
Round 2 – SP Tony Willoughby [66/81]
Round 3 – LF Lewis White [65/78]
Round 4 – 3B Joe Cahill [65/77]
Round 5 – 1B Gaspar Clopes [61/77]
Round 6 – Scrap player

I still need a catcher so I went out and got Toby Hall in exchange for Ryan Dempster and a minor leaguer. Dempster will be replaced by last year’s first round pick Carlos Aquino. The last trade we made was trading away Lyle Overbay for a CF. We got Jeff Duncan a speedy 27 year old from the Mets. He will bat 1st and start in center.

April 2006- Can we keep improving?

Breakdown: We are 10-13 after a month of action. As a team we are hitting a mediocre .264. Our team ERA is an excellent 3.64, led by Tony Armas and Ben Sheets who have a 3.71 and 3.41 ERA respectively. Rookie Neil Hoyal is on fire pitching 15 innings of relief and no runs given up. He has a 20-4 K/BB ratio.

May 2006- Let’s try to get above .500.

Breakdown: Wow what a pathetic month. A 6-22 record brings our overall record to 16-35. Injuries have just eaten this team up and really have hurt it. We are hitting .250 as a team, with Weeks hitting .247.

June 2006- Let’s try to improve by ten games this month!

Breakdown: Well we really didn’t improve by ten games but we were 11-16. Fielder is really not doing well on power with only 5 homers but has hit for a .299 average. Injury has benched Jeff Duncan for the rest of the year.

July 2006- Trade Deadline could see Jenks being traded.

Breakdown: We have traded away Geoff Jenkins away for cash. Approximately 3.5 million will be coming to us in this deal. We ended up with an 8-19 record for the month. I plan on using some of my prospects in September so be ready for these guys to come up one by one.

August 2006- The DOG days of August are here.

Breakdown: We had a 10-18 record which brought our overall to 45-88. Carlos Aquino is having a really good rookie season with an 8-7 record and an era of 4.07. Doug Davis is 1-16 this year and I plan on letting him go at the end of the season. I signed Pete Zocolillo to a one year deal worth $1.3 million.

September/October 2006- The end of a really poor season.

Breakdown: In September we went 14-12 with our very first winning month for this year! We also won our last three games in October and we ended with a 62-100 record. The rotation not including Doug Davis had a really good year all with below 4.50 eras!

Contract Expirations-

Re Signed-
Rickie Weeks – Signed for $1.2 million for 3 years

Released-
Perry Wesp
B.J. Surhoff
Keith Ginter
Trevor Hoffman
Dave Burba

It looks as though we are going to have to go the cheap route. I have decided that this off season I want to go for fielding players and control pitchers. Everyone is trade bait except for Ben Sheets like usual.

At each position I will give you the fielding ratings (Arm/Range/Fielding):

C – Toby Hall 93/75/88: Very respectable that is really what we need at this position
1B – Prince Fielder 76/92/63: This is a position that does not have to be good at defense.
2B – Rickie Weeks 75/65/57: This is a position where we need superb defense and we don’t have it.
3B – Mark Derosa 90/93/70: One of the best 3B in the league right now.
SS – Kahlil Greene 85/93/65: This is the most important position for defense on the field. We are looking in the draft to get someone that can really improve fielding here!
LF – Dernell Stenson 76/88/63: Decent fielding here. We really want good arms at the corner outfield spots.
CF – Jeff Duncan 63/92/90: Here is another really important fielding position. We would like to get someone with a little better arm out here in the future.
RF – Nick Cooper 75/65/70: This is where we would really like to improve…Cooper could be traded for a power hitter that can really field this off season.

So after this we would like to get a 2B, SS, and a RF. We would also really like to get a couple more control pitchers in the rotation.

Rickie Weeks was signed so that we wouldn’t lose him for nothing…he will most likely be traded this year or next for another middle infielder.

• We signed OF Julio Ramirez for 2 years worth $890K a year.

We have traded away Derrick Turnbow and Rickie Weeks for Bo Hart. Hart who has been with St. Louis his whole career has really good defense and will hit for very good average. Next, we traded away starting pitcher Tony Armas Jr. for SS Chase Utely who will start this year.

• We signed SP Willard Beard for 1 year worth $3.3 million.
• We signed RP Juan Rincon for a 4 year deal worth $1.9 million every year

Lastly we traded away RF prospect Nick Cooper for $ 2 million dollars in cash.

• We signed LF Melvin Mora for 3 years worth $1.4 million.

THE DRAFT-

Round 1 – SP Jason Arodin [77/90] will start out at AAA this year to be ready next year
Round 2 – LF Ted Steger [70/90]
Round 3 – RF Alex Knopp [66/90]
Round 4 – 1B Juan Figo [53/90]
Round 5 – SP Bert Sexton [53/79]
Round 6 – Scrap player
