MY BREWERS DYNASTY

Having learned recently that the long suffering fans in Milwaukee have not celebrated a winning season in well over a decade, (1992), and not made a post season trip in twenty years, i will start my latest dynasty as the Brewers.

Start Date: 2004
Difficulty: Mogul
League Revenue: +30%
Salary Demands: -30% (helps to reduce players "lost" from the free agency pool, as only 70 batters and 70 pitchers can be stored. Allows more teams to hang on to their own free agents and, i believe makes for a more realistic game)

I plan to set specific season goals so that i can measure progression. However, i have these goals for the dynasty as a whole:

Build a solid team that can realistically expect to contend year on year (within five seasons)

Always turn a profit and maintain financial stability

Always continue to improve (requires five more wins than the previous year OR a trip to the post
season)

A FEW THOUGHTS

During my reign as GM there are a few loose guidelines that i'd like to follow, just to make things a bit more interesting and involved. These probably stem from being an A's fan, and why i like the challenge of small market teams.

Build a team around good batting average and on base percentage, not power.

Strong pitching staff and good bullpen
Looking for pitchers with good movement ratings, "groundball" pitchers.

Solid defensive ball club , esp. down the middle (2B,SS,CF), to assist groundball pitchers. If im looking to sign a player, however he doesn't fit my defensive mindset, then i shall look for an alternative. (Normally i don't pay too much attention to defense, so we'll see how this works)

In essence i am looking to build a team that do the little things well, who play "Small Ball" and "manufacture" runs. Good OBP, stolen bases, bunts etc...

LET'S PLAY BALL!

In addition to the goals i have already stated, i hope to achieve the following in 2004:

Win 70 Games
Start rebuilding process
Cut payroll to between $20-25 million
Have 2,000,000 fans attend this season

Having arrived at Miller Park and taken a good look around, i have to say i am mightily impressed with the facilities. If only it was occasionally more than a third full!! Last seasons total attendance of 995,846 was the league worst, with an average of only 12,000 turning out. Needless to say that revenue generated in Milwaukee was ranked dead last last year.

That would have to change or any spending power would be reduced to whatever small change could be found down the back of the sofa in the owner's office.

Firstly, we'll worry about the players rather than any fans that may or may not wish to turn up.

Having looked at the roster, it is evident that we have some reasonable players all demanding million dollar salaries to remain after the season! With the following being the main cause for concern:

(current salary - requested salary)

2B Junior Spivey $860,000 $3.5MILL
RF Ben Grieve $640,000 $1.7MILL
LF Brooks Kieschnick $450,000 $1.9MILL
C Gary Bennett $690,000 $1.1MILL

SP Ben Sheets $870,000 $6.0MILL
RP Curt Leskanic $2.5MILL $2.5MILL
RP Luis Vizcaino $420,000 $1.4MILL
RP Jayson Durocher $300,000 $1.4MILL

Due to a severe lack of pitching, and a very reasonable price, we resign the solid gold arm of Ben Sheets to a five year extension (next six seasons) at $5.6mill. Bargain! Mark my words: ALL STAR CALIBER.

Grieve and Kieschnick will fight for the last spot in the outfield (RF), with Grieve being named the starter (Better all-round, better defense) while Kieschnick (brilliant raw power) will be the main PH to start the season. Kieschnick likely to be traded by deadline, after his stock increases and we can find a new requirement.

Vizcaino and Durocher form the heart of the bullpen; the setup and short guys respectively. Likelihood of both returning next year? Pretty good.

TRADES

METS SENT: JUNIOR SPIVEY (2B)
BREWERS RECEIVE: JOSE REYES (SS)

Analysis: Spivey, is a very good 2B in every aspect, however his poor performance last season, not excelling in any one area, and his high demands make him pruneable.
Reyes provides us with the franchise shortstop we need (such a speicialised position). He plays great 'D', hits for average and has the speed to swipe 50 bases. Plus he's signed cheap through five years.

BRAVES SENT: GARY BENNETT (C), MARK SMITH (LF) and CURT LESKANIC(P)
BREWERS RECEIVE: HORACIO RAMIREZ (P)

Analysis: Bennett, a solid backup catcher, would want over a million to stay. There is little to no chance of him being named the starter and our third catcher is a very solid backup.
Leskanic, quite old at 35, will make 2.5 mill this year. Unlikely to be resigned due to age and cost; excellent trade bait. We had to let Smith go unfortunately, as he's a good player, however, as the roster stands he was no better than the sixth (maybe seventh) OF.
Ramirex provides us with a future marquee starter who is ready to slide into the No.2 slot in the rotation. Again, signed cheaply and through five years, should be a major part of the rebuilding process.

Other Signings
Signed: Jose Montejo (C) @ $300,000 for 2 years
Kevin Harvey (P) @ $380,000 for 2 years
Henry Kunz (P) @ $480,000 for 2 years

(All of which go straight to AAA)

We also offered extensions to Craig Counsell (3B) (1 year $1.9mill), Enrique Cruz (SS) (1 year $300,000) and Pete Zoccolillo (RF)(1 year $300,000).
This dropped Counsell's salary from $2.9mill and ensures that we have at least a good back up next year.

Tickets have been set to $17.50 and a local blackout placed on the area. We'll see how many bother to show up and adjust prices accordingly.

Farm budget $4mill
Scouting budget $4mill
Medical budget $2mill

Budget allocation will probably alter month by month.

BRING ON OPENING DAY

The two trades give us a good starting point to work from. We'll begin the season with the players we have now, and we'll discover, and hopefully fill, any weaknessess as they appear.

Look for Kieschnick, Wes Helms and John Van Der Wal to be moved by the end of July. Also very interested in Arizona catcher Robby Hammock. Superior defensively, even over our own Moeller, and the potential to become a pretty nice fit in our system (hitting for average). Signed cheaply as well. Watch this space......

Thoughts on Team:

The Outfield:
Scotty Po is the centre of our rebuilding process, posessing all of the traits we require; good eye and contact, speed, solid 'D'.
Jenkins provides us with both a good average and power hitter who can play 'D'. His $5.3mill salary may cause problems down the line though. Grieve may walk this off season. Kind of depends on the year he has.

The Infield:
Reyes is a franchise shortstop. Pure and simple. He fits into our whole philosophy of average over power, and of solid defense. Keith Ginter is a very good team player, very solid 'D' and reasonable hitter. Having him in the lineup means that there's no need to rush our top prospect (2B Ricky Weekes). Lyle Overbay plays great 'D' and hits for average. May require an upgrade here. Only when all other needs filled. Over on the hot corner we have problems. Counsell will start, however he may find the load too much. No good 3B's to trade for either. Wait until draft or free agency to address this major need. Chad Moeller is a great defensive catcher, however he probably lacks the ability to hit for over .270. Looking for upgrade without sacrificing defense. (Robby Hammock??)

The Rotation:
Sheets should provide a very good season, hopefully between 10 - 15 wins. He is the anchor of the rotation. Ramirez will hopefully also pitch to double digit wins, whilst progressing ready for next season. Chris Capuano, a rookie, will be looking to get his feet wet as it were, looking to be a threat next season. Both Davis and Kinney are requesting $millions to resign so will both probably leave. Expectations not overly high for these two....

The Pen:
Vizcaino and Durocher are both solid guys to have in close ball games. Expect sub 3.00 era's and lots of valuable innings to come from this pair. Danny Kolb will once again close. He may even be better than the two prior to him. Todd Ritchie fills middle relief, however he's really a long reliever. Need a new middle reliever? Dave Burba (long) and David Manning (the unlucky "sixth starter) round out the staff.

APRIL 2004

Overall Record: 14-9 (leading the division, 1.0 game up on Cincy)
Other Division Leaders: Red Sox, Twins, Athletics, Mets and Padres/Giants.

LEAGUE LEADERS

Ave: Morgan Burkhart (.400)
HR: Richie Sexson (11)
RBI: Richie Sexson (29)
Steals: Juan Pierre, JOSE REYES (9)

Wins: Five tied with (4)
ERA: Tony Armas Jr. (0.74)
K's: Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez (36)
Saves: Keith Foulke (11)

AROUND THE LEAGUE

Two computer-trades took place this month:

Cleveland Sent: Vance Wilson (C)(77OA,77PK)
Mets Sent: Lou Merloni (SS)(68OA,68PK), Jason Stanford (P)(69OA,75PK) and Greg LaRocca (3B)(64OA,66PK)

Winner? Well, Wilson has hit .300 since becoming an Indian. On the other side, Merloni is hitting .250, while both Stanford and LaRocca are in AAA (Stanford may get a shot, however he is already 27). Verdict: Looks like a Tribe win to me.

Mariners Sent: Brian Daubach (1B)(80OA,80PK)
Red Sox Sent: Julio Mateo (P)(75OA,81PK)

On paper it appears that the Red Sox got the upper hand due to Daubach's impending free agency. However, Daubach (.304, 5HR) is contributing in Seattle while Mateo has a sky high ERA in both the Majors and Minors this year (can't figure out why). Verdict: Seattle get one over on Bo Sox.

Milestones Achieved

Mike Mussina 200th Win
Matt Williams 1000th Run
Larry Walker 2000th Hit
Omar Vizquel 300th Steal
Armando Benitez 200th Save
Kevin Appier 2000th Strikeout
Roberto Alomar 1500th Run
Alex Rodriguez 1000th RBI

Serious Injuries (more than four weeks out)

Jarrod Washburn Wrist Stress Fracture 4 weeks
Jason Schmidt Wrist Stress Fracture 4 weeks

BREWERS PLAYER OF THE MONTH
Geoff Jenkins may have hit .337 however the award goes to Keith Ginter (yes thats not a mis-print!). Keith hit .306/.404/.583, whilst knocking in 21 base runners (team high) and belting 6 Home Runs (also team high). All of this achieved from the 8th spot in the lineup!

BREWERS PITCHER OF THE MONTH
Matt Kinney's 3-0 record and 1.77 ERA (only beaten by Armas Jr.) must take it (only three starts though). Luis Vizcaino's 14.1 innings of work, coupled with a 1.88 ERA make him a strong candidate too.

AAA WATCH

Free Agent acquisition Kevin Harvey has been blowing the competition away in AAA. His ERA (2.36) is fourth among the minors, however, the top three have all pitched multiple seasons in the bigs. He also has 26 k's in 26 innings. Could he be the new middle reliever? Lets give him another month in AAA.
Rickie Weekes (2B) is the guy to watch here. Only .263 average this month, but give him a couple of years and he will be one fine young 2B, ready for the big leagues.

SUMMARY

A winning month? I thought this little luxury would take a lot longer to arrive. This defense idea is really paying off. We have the highest fielding percentage in the league and through April we have conceded a league low (yes, a league low) in Runs Allowed (73)!! We have also hit a league low 16 Home Runs(tied with Florida) but it doesn't appear to have affected our results, as solid 'D' (.990 fielding percentage) and pitching (3.09 team ERA, 2nd behind St Louis, 3.07ERA) has put us atop the Central.

Roster Moves:
April 21st 2004: Resign Luis Vizcaino and Jayson Durocher to 4-year contract extensions, both worth $1.5million.
Reason: Both pitchers had started brilliantly and if we had waited to the seasons end it would have cost us a lot more to resign the pair. I do not like discussing contracts during the season and so do not plan on doing so again.

The Outfield:

Scotty Po has hit .295/.337 so far this season, really needs to get on base a little more (only six walks). Also has 8 steals. 1 HR and 12 RBI's. Jenkins is hitting .337/.404 with three homers and 15 RBI's. Grieve has hit a disappointing .241 so far but has walked 14 times for an OBP of .362. Only 8 RBI's from the #5 spot, needs to pickup his form if he wishes to be resigned at the end of the year.

The Infield:

Reyes has had a slow start hitting just .240/.276! This is not on from our leadoff guy and he must turn it around this coming month. Ginter has had an awesome month (see "Player of the Month" above), maybe a promotion up the order? Overbay has quietly had a good month hitting .304/.368 with 2HR. Oh dear... problems continue at 3B with Counsell hitting just .217/.298 and Helms hitting only .156/.206. Moeller has only hit for .206, however he has walked 17 times for an OBP of .365.

The Rotation:

Sheets' (2-3) has an ERA of 4.91, far higher than anyone else. Two of his losses occurred with no run support but that ERA is too high. Ramirez has pitched superbly since becoming a Brewer. His ERA of 2.53 is fantastic, unfortunately his record stands at 1-3. Go Figure. Capuano (4-1, 3.60), Davis (3-2, 2.08) and Kinney (3-0, 1.17) have all pitched very, very well, which was not at all predicted. Not counting any chickens though....i'm sure at least one of them has a big, red self destruct button!!

The Pen:
Kolb (9.2IP, 2.79ERA, 5 Saves-5 Chances), Vizcaino (14.1IP, 1.88 ERA, 1-0) and Durocher (13.2IP, 3.29ERA) have all pitched as well as i'd hoped for. Lets hope they keep it up. No lost games or blown saves by the pen this month. Ritchie (10.1IP, 4.35 ERA) could replace Burba (4.2IP, 15.43ERA) as long reliever if Harvey is called up to fill the middle relief role. Manning (11.0IP, 0.00ERA) rounds out a very competent staff.

BEHIND THE SCENES
42,000! 42,000!! 42,000!!!

In case you didn't guess, that's the magic number of Brewer's fans we've been able to drag along (on average) to each home game. This means that in a single month we have had over half of last years total attendance pass through the gates at Miller Park. Looks like revenue may be up a little this year......

Tickets and concessions remain at the same prices, and an extra million dollars gets pumped into all three phases: Farm, Scouting and Medical.

MAY 2004

(Unfortunately deleted my notes for the month so you'll have to put up with the bare minimum i remember)

Overall Record : 30-20 (leading the division, 1.0 game up on the Cards)

AROUND THE LEAGUE

Just the one trade this month. The Yankees sent five bench warmers and AAA guys to the Dodgers in return for three of theirs. Verdict? Dodgers get Seguignol who is by far the best player in this trade (it really did involve nobody!) and they receive more bodies than the Yanks. Dodgers win.

Serious Injuries

Morgan Ensberg Fractured Foot (5 weeks)
BROOKS KIESCHNICK Ankle Stress Fracture (3 Weeks)
Alfonso Soriano Fractured Foot (6 Weeks)

BREWERS PLAYER OF THE MONTH
Very poor month for hiting so it makes choosing "the best of the poor" very difficult. Jose Reyes raised his batting average up by 25 points so i guess he should receive this "accolade".

BREWERS PITCHER OF THE MONTH
Ben Sheets' 5 - 1 record and 3.24 ERA win him this award hands down. That's ma boy!

SUMMARY

Another winning month? The wins keep on piling up and we remain in first place. Hitting has dropped off dramatically with only Reyes raising his average. This will have to improve if we want to continue winning ways. Pitching has continued to excel and team ERA is around 3.60.

The Outfield:

Scotty Po has dropped his average to .260! Just not good enough. He really must improve if we are to continue winning ballgames.. Jenkins is still hitting over .300, however he has cooled off dramatically since his first month. Grieve continues to hit around .250. Kieschnick has been given a brief shot in right field before getting injured. He was hitting around .333 though!

The Infield:

Reyes has lifted his average by 25 points and will hopefully continue to raise his average. Ginter has cooled off (probably to be expected) and is hitting .270. He still leads the team (tied) for the HR lead. Overbay has quietly had another good month hitting .299. Helms and Counsell continue to split time, however Helms looks to cement himself as the starter has he starts to creep towards .300. Moeller continues to struggle. Lets see if he can wake up before next month!

The Rotation:

Sheets has pitched like we knew he could and is showing just why we invested our future in him. Ramirez has pitched superbly once more as his ERA remains well below 3.00. Capuano has begun to come back down to earth however Kinney (who is having a fantastic year) and Davis continue to pitch well.

The Pen:
Another good month from the Pen. Kolb has blown two saves however, and at times ERA's have hovered around th 5.00 mark, although they all seem to have settled at around 3.00.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Average attendance has dropped a little (still over 40,000 though).

Tickets and concessions remain at the same prices, and an extra million dollars gets pumped into all three phases: Farm, Scouting and Medical.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

TRADES

Two more trades to analyse this month. The first of which could be a biggun'. Kelly Wunsch packed his bags and was shipped off to Philly along with Timo Perez and Mike Porzio for company. Passing them on route to the White Sox where five Phillies: Elderly Dan PLesac, free-agents-to-be Shawn Wooten, Travis Chapman and Todd Pratt (1B, 3B and C) and top second base prospect Chase Utley. Winner? Well the Phillies receive a top class reliever in Wunsch, who should help them contend down the stretch. Perez is also a very solid LF and should provide some very good depth for them. However, giving up Utley may have been an error. He is a fantastic prospect (not quite as good as our own Rickie Weekes!!!) and should develop into a prime 2B. He is also good enough to start right away on some teams. With Polanco possibly leaving them at the end of the year, Utley could very well have been their starter. I like what Chicago got here. Their bullpen is reasonably well stocked as it is, and probably would not have resigned Wunsch in the off season.

In the less glamorous trade of the two Royals 2B Carlos Febles was sent to Baltimore for aging veteran reliever Hector Carrasco. I personally like Febles as a 2B, however he was the Royals' backup. The Royals desperately needed some more pitching and they certainly got some for the remainder of this season. Considering that both Hairston and Roberts are 1 and two at 2B for the Orioles, it is hard to see where Febles fits in. Winner? The Royals improved themselves more than the Orioles. Loser? Carlos Febles!! He's been traded from backup to third string. Plus he's had to fly a few hundred miles.

BREWERS PLAYER OF THE MONTH (June 1st 'till All-Star Break)

Scotty Po has lifted his average to .287, much improved than at the beginning of the month. However, Wes Helms continues to hit well and his average of .304 and 11 HR's earns him this award.

BREWERS PITCHER OF THE MONTH (June 1st 'till All-Star Break)

Horacio Ramirez's ERA is still well under 3.00 (2.88) however his record of 5-5 does not reflect this. There is only really one true candidate here, Ben Sheets , with a 13-5 record and a 2.92 ERA, he continues to excel as our No. 1.

SUMMARY

First things first.

ALL STAR GAME

The NL beat the AL by a score of 6-5, lead by Barry Bonds and Scott Rolen. We sent one to the BIG game, Ben "Golden Arm" Sheets. He pitched a scoreless seventh with two k's and represented us well i feel.

In the HR Derby Eric Chavez and Jeff Bagwell went 1 and two respectively in every round. It was Chavez who edged Bagwell 2-1 in the final round.

Well, we continue to remain in sole posession of the Central, still just one game up over Cincy. The batting has been a real concern up until now as everybody seems to be dropping off rapidly. The pitching is the sole reason we are No. 1, however, the chances of that lasting an entire season appear to be slim.

Expect one or two trades to be worked out in the coming weeks...

The Outfield:

Like i said, Podsednik has lifted his average by nearly thirty points and is starting to hit like we had hoped he would. What's happened to Jenks ? He appears to have been going to bat with a wet fish rather than a bat!!! His average has dropped to .266!! His 13 HR's still continue to power the line up however. We really need him to rediscover some of that early form. Both Grieve and Kiesch are hitting .256/.350 whilst sharing time in RF. I don't think that these two are really the answer so expect a possible trade to be lurking.

The Infield:

Reyes has continued to hover round the .270 mark. We had really hoped for around .300, however he is still progressing and learning. Im sure he'll pick it up later in the season. Ginter has flattened his average at .255 but continues to power the lineup with a team high 14 HR's. He is still having a very good year, as we didn't expect much offense from the 2B slot. Overbay (.273/9 HR's) continues to hit solidly and is now batting No.3. He still hasn't committed a single error so far (78 Games). Now that's defense for ya! Moeller continues to struggle at the plate. If it weren't for his great work with the pitching staff he may have well been out the door. Wes Helms has made the 3B position his own and is hitting very well indeed. He's not as good defensively as we would like, however he is aiding our stuttering offense.

The Rotation:

Mr.Sheets has performed superbly and both his excellent record and ERA show this. Ramirez has also pitched far beyond anything we could have hoped for, here's just hoping he gets a little run support and picks up a few more wins. Matt Kinney (7-4 3.06 ERA) has been the real surprise of this team so far. We didn't expect anything from him this year and expected to let him go at the end of the year. He's doing his level best to get resigned or boost his free agent value. Capuano and Davis have had thier struggles, however round out a very, very good rotation.

The Pen:

Kolb's ERA has risen to over 4.00, but his 23 Saves/3Blown Saves put him third in the league in clutch situations. Vizcaino and Durocher both have solid ERA's (around 3.50) and continue to justify their resignings. Todd Ritchie has pitched fantastically with a 2.25 ERA coming out in long relief while Dave Manning has pitched well as the "sixth starter" (he's currently out for two weeks-mild shoulder separation or something).

BEHIND THE SCENES

Attendance continues to exceed 40,000 which is fantastic! We are now very close to eclipsing the number of fans we wanted to see this year.

Tickets and concessions remain at the same prices, and an extra million dollars gets pumped into all three phases: Farm, Scouting and Medical.

Profit is up over $15 million[/B] , which should prove very useful in the off season.
