Hey i was doing arbitration for Vernon Wells and he wanted a player option. I offered him a team option, and he turned it down. However, his next offer contained both a player option and a team option. Is this is a bug??

They are including the team option in a compromise. He is trying to make you more like to come to an agreement.

Is there a way to offer a player arbritation??

Arbitration only happens durring the time a team has exclusive rights to a player and he has 3 years of playing time(or the 17 or whatever percent). This is the only time arbitration is able to happen and frankly the only time i would think anyone would want it.

Wrong SG Steve. Arbitration can be offered in leiu of a regular contract by the controlling team. The player can either accept arbitration or turn it down and become a free agent. This does happen after their initial arb period. For example Pedro martinez was offered arb by the red sox this offseason and chose not to accept it. The sox are compensated with draft picks.

An example of an arb case is the case of Roger Clemens. Clemens was a free agent but still controlled by the Astros. He was offered arbitration and accepted, taking what the arbitor decided instead of becoming a free agent.

If our player turns it down, are we compensated with draft picks?

Ideally yes, I don't think draft pick compensation is part of the game but it would be nice to see. The draft pick compensation works like this. Players are assigned a point and letter value based on performance. Type A, B and C. Type A free agents (Pedro Martinez, Beltran, ARod) garner the signing teams first round pick and a sandwich pick between the first and 2nd rounds.

However, if say the Diamondbacks signed Martinez, they do not lose their first round pick because the first 10 picks in the draft are protected. Instead they lose their 2nd round pick and the other team still gets that sandwich pick in between the 1st and 2nd round.

Type B free agents can net anywhere from a 2nd to 3rd round pick and usually another sandwich pick after the 2nd round.

Type C free agents if signed dont net any arbitration. These guys are usually your backup and utility players, last guys out of the bullpen or guys who just arent really all that great.

There's no compensation in this version of the game so far. The difficult thing i would imagine would be the computer player assigning who was at what level. I would love to see this in the current incarnation of the game tho.

Unfortunately I think the only way Clay could do it would be to assign them by "Peak" rankings, with consideration given to All-Stars, and League Leaders, Rookie of the Year, etc.

I'd imagine it would have to do with playing time as well. If a highly rated bench player went up is he still valuable? I see a starter at 89 and a bench guy at his position at 85 all the time. I think all factors would have to be worked in but ther eshould be a special emphasis on value to that one team.

Compensation picks are not yet part of the game. Right now, Arbitration only happens to players that are NOT YET eligible for Free Agency (which happens at 6 years of service time).
