View Full Version : Stats tool

Is there a tool out there that will take exported statistics and create reports (hopefully sortable) including some of the more arcane sabermetrics (i.e. win shares). Or, as an alternative, even a website that has formulas for such things, not just explanations of what they are. I've been searching for quite a while and I've come up almost entirely empty.
You can find a methodology for Win Shares here - http://www.baseballgraphs.com/details.html#sharecalc
It's not a simple formula and not for the faint-hearted.
I have a win shares spreadsheet that I got from the OOTP boards but never ended up using. You may find it useful.
Let me know what other sort of formulas you might want.

The quick answer is all I can get my hands on. I took plenty of college-level math, so that kind of thing doesn't scare me. The issue is that when, using that site you gave as an example (since I found that last night), it says in the first bullet point, "You next adjust your team's runs scored and runs allowed for the ballpark in which they played half their games (i.e. home games)." That's a good thing to know you have to do, but it gives no method for doing so, making the entire formula useless.
Basically, if there's a website that has all the individual variables written up in the form *of* a formula (or series thereof), that would be much better than describing it all in words...I can find definitions of these things anywhere, it seems.
Also, I find it interesting that GIDP is a stat available on the leaders screen but nowhere else. You can't display GIDP for just anyone in the game, making it very difficult to use, say, Paul Johnson's Estimated Runs Produced metric.
EDIT: Thanks for the spreadsheet. That's exactly what I'm looking for...if I can find an automated way to add up, say, all the at bats for the league... :)
To get the AB for a league, you can go to the Roster Screen and select All Players - make sure that AB is one of the columns. Copy it to the clipboard and open it in Excel. Get the sum of the AB column.
You can see what I mean about Win Shares. It's not a straightforward formula like OBP. There's a lot of adjustments for park and league data. I've never successfully worked them out but there's more here if it's any help.

21C, in the last link in your signature, will it work for 06?
Yes, it does. Let me know if you have any problems with it.

Heh, it crashes...a lot. Just about every time I try to create a new database or add box scores to the database, it gives a runtime error and exits.
Here's one for ya...any way to see GIDP without looking at the Leaders screen? That's the only place I can find it, and of course that only shows 10 people.

Works for me. You should have text files listed in the file window first - it won't work if it can't find any box scores. If not, then change the box score folder location - menu option up top. What error number does it give?

Can't see any other way.
It might need adding to the Roster Screen. But then Clay has never fixed the Pitchers' OOPS that I first posted about a year ago (http://forum.sportsmogul.com/showthread.php?t=55085) as well as issues with PO/G and DP/G (http://forum.sportsmogul.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55086). The Fld%, Range and RF values are FUBAR as well.

I've seen a few different ones. I should've written them down, I know.
Sometimes, if I change the folder location, choose create database, and hit the database button, it gives an error number 70 (Permission denied) and then exits. I can't seem to reproduce the other one(s) at the moment, but I'll let you know if I do.

Eh. That makes a lot of these formulae useless.

Odd. The DP/G works fine in the scouting report screen but not in the roster screen. The one on the roster screen = (DP/G)*100. Similar for PO/G. It = (assists/game)*100. So, at least they're not completely without rhyme or reason, but they are wrong. Suppose that doesn't leave much hope for getting GIDP on the roster screen, huh?

I think I've seen the error 70 occur when a program attempts to open a file that's already opened but I couldn't reproduce it with this program.
I have seen the problem where the program crashes with an RTE 53 when you change the folder. If you reopen the program straight away, it works OK. I left out a line of code.
