View Full Version : Question on player position?

Lets say I wanted to take a position player (say a catcher) and make him another position player (say center fielder) would his position on the player profile change after a given amount of time or would it always read catcher even after playing 10 years at center? I ask this because as we know if you play any player out of position it only shows his fielding stats for his primary position and not his new/permanant position.

BTW the above is clearly hypothetical as there are very few catchers with the legs for center but I wanted it to sound as outlandish as possible as it is not unrealistic to have an aging player switch to an easier position or have a rookie that looks promising but doesn't play in a position that is useful. Who knew that a pitcher such as Babe Ruth could become a homerun king? I'm sure his manager didn't.

Using a more realistic example, I'm playing Montreal and have Michael Barrett - as a 3B, I would really like to use him as a C, but at the moment I have him in AAA, so I can't set his defensive position and he keeps accumulating stats as a third baseman... is there a way I can have him as a C in AAA, am I missing something?

I had Aubrey Huff when he was 23 years old. He was listed as a third basemen. I already had a superstar third basemen, so I put Huff at second every season. Now he is 28 years old and in his 5th season at 2nd base, and his position is now listed as second and it displays his stats from second. And he's pretty good at it- .979 career fielding % with only 36 errors in 400+ games.

I've seen a couple of instances where the players' positions switched after a few years [including takaplan's Huff example]. If I'm not mistaken, the new position is added to the list shown on the "Defense" page.

I haven't seen a way to do what Imo proposed yet. Although, it'd be an incredible addition to the game. It'd allow you to train younger players for other positions in case of a logjam. [Clay? Ian? Please? :)]

Baseball Mogul 2000 had an option to do what Takaplan did (force a player into a new position by leaving him there for about 162 games...)

But alas, you couldn't direct player development in the minors.

So, the Baseball Mogul 2002 CD added a 'Change Position' feature. I haven't yet incorporated this into Baseball Mogul Online because I'm still a bit worried that it's not perfectly balanced for game play (e.g. I don't want to see Manny Ramirez turned into a catcher in every league) but I do plan to add it.

Thanks for your quick response Clay. I appreciate it as usual. By the way, I'm having a blast with the online game!
