How does Baseball-Reference.com differentiate between people with the same name? I've got 2 Kevin Browns on the team and they both go to the correct page. I just want to know how it knows. It obviously has all the correct information in the game but how does that reflect on the link?
I probably used to know this anyway...

'I think it has like a player code for each player. It can be screwy though. For example, when creating my roster, Robert Fick was missing, so I copied another player and editted the stats to Ficks' stats. If you click his name,it takes you to the guy who I copied to make him

I do some work with baseball-almanac.com and they use the same method, although not all players have an identical ID. The code works like this: the first 5 letters of the players last name, followed by the first two letters of the players first name, then a two digit number to differentiate between copies. So, Kevin Brown for example would be brownke01 and brownke02. As far as I know, there is no reliable way to know which Kevin Brown will be #01 and which one will be #02 with out just guessing.

I probably used to know this anyway...Each player's stat page is associated with their Lahman ID.
