    Re: Bleeding Dodger Blue

Chicago continues to stay ahead of the pack, gaining two games on St Louis during the month. 8 out of 10 teams are above .500 while the lowly Dodgers and Mets continue to trowl the bottom, fighting for the number 1 pick next year.

Bob Gibson began to get his form back but still is a ways off from his first months pure dominance. Juan Marichal is about to become the first pitcher in the NL to win 20, and Jim Maloney is pacing the league with 222 strikeouts and Roy Face continues to lead in saves with 19.

Roberto Clemente is leading the league with a .334 avg but Jim Beauchamp and Matty Alou are close by with .333 averages. Roger Maris and Hank Aaron finally overtook Ernie Banks who ended the month with 33 home runs. Maris and Aaron both have 34. Banks is leading with 101 runs batted in and Lou Brock is still adding to his record steals total, while Maury Wills at 54 and Joe Morgan at 51 are light years behind.

With Minnesota and Chicago both making up multiple games on Detroit as the Tigers pulled out a losing month for the first time this year. Baltimore as usual pulled out a horrible month going 6-22.

Bob Heffner regained the ERA lead by default. Jim Bouton pitched only 2 times in August and doesn't have the innings yet to win it. Dean Chance won his 21 st game on the 28th helping him have his 2nd 20 win season in a row, 3rd of his career. Luis Tiant continues to have a great season for the lowly Indians. He currently has 245 strike outs.

The summer swoon hit most of the batters during August, but Norm Cash managed to hold on to his lead with a .334 average. Frank Robinson, Jimmie Hall and Bob Chance all kept their places in the home run race. Robinson leads with 35 and Jimmie Hall has 33, while Chance slumped a bit but ended up with 28 with tied him with Duke Sims. Bert Campaneris kept his lead in steals. Robinson kept his lead in the runs batted in department.

Finally hitting a good stride over August, although the great pitching didn't turn into wins. Lot's of ERA's all over the place went down. Sutton finally hit some strides and dropped his ERA a full run. He ran up 5 straight starts where he didn't allow more than one run in a game.

Lots of movement to and fro from Los Angeles to Spokane kept most of the pitchers from settling in.

Geoff Zahn finished up a great season and will be looking up for a promotion to AAA next year. Kekich might stick in New Mexico for one more year.

Buckner is coming into his own and showing that he could belong in the Dodgers plans. Cey is coming around, hitting .291 with 6 home runs. There is lots of questions to be answered in the off season and with incoming expansion, movements will be determined by who gets taken and who doesn't.

The Gator hit a couple of rough starts, but had a 8 inning 3 hit game to close out August. Most of the pitchers currently here aren't planning on being moved up. Next year Foster, Guidry, Vance and Hough should provide a decent rotation.

Bill Russell continues to improve while both Steve Garvey and Steve Yeager seemed to have taken steps back and slumped, leaving the powers that be with the decision of what to do. Promoting them doesn't make too much sense considering the trouble they have had, but leaving in Odgen might be confidence destroyers. This offseason should be interesting.

Ray Burris finally started showing why he got drafted so early. Elias Sosa also had a great August. It doesnt look like any of the pitchers will be moving up except Burris, although that isn't written in stone.

    Re: Bleeding Dodger Blue

The White Sox returned to the top, as they started the season the same way. Detroit seriously floundered early and were never able to make up the games. The White Sox were last in the World Series in 1959, losing to the Dodgers, but they haven't won it all since 1917.

Overall the Orioles obviously proved to be the big disappointment, falling 19 games off their 1967 record, The Yankees and the A's proved to be the biggest gainers, while the Angels continued their steady improvement since their inception in 1961. With the upcoming expansion, and talk of divisions it will be interesting to see how the leaders get hit by the draft. If this was divided into the divisions that are talked about, the top 2 teams would of been in the playoffs.

The Cubbies basically controlled the league, with various teams taking shots but none seriously giving way. The Cubbies return to the World Series for the first time since 1945 losing to the Detroit Tigers, but haven't been World Champions since 1908.

While the Cubbies won, The Astros improved by 18 games and while the Dodgers fell by 19 games. With divisions coming up, it'll be an interesting year in 1969.
