While I find some of the "OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE WHITNEY HOUSTON'S DEAD" nonsense over the top, what's even worse is the whole "we need some perspective because there's millions of starving people in Africa" line every time a celebrity dies.

Well no **** they did. Such is life in the 24-hour news cycle. The big 24-hour networks (MSNBC, CNN, Fox) all figured out a long time ago that apparently there's the most money in taking the one big story of the day and bludgeoning it into an unrecognizable pulp.
