Anticipating the argument from someone, I certainly don't think steroid use is any more illegitimate than leveraging your popularity into 3 seasons of being some ******** player/manager so that you can squeeze out another 200 hits while playing at a sub-replacement level.

Meh, he was hardly sub-replacement level in '84 and '85; he was about average as a hitter both years. In '86, well since we don't know exactly what replacement level is, it's hard to say if he was sub-replacement level, but he was certainly pretty bad. Actually, I guess he was sub-replacement level that season, as even he only gave himself about half a season's worth of PAs.
Hey uh....
BEANE MACHINE
Pete Rose, by the end, had no speed and singles-only power, and was a terrible first baseman. I actually remember watching him play in the mid-80s and wondering why the all-time hits leader was such a bad player. By the end of his playing days, he was beyond useless. And especially not worth the Reds pissing away almost 300 PAs on him in 1986 that could have gone to Nick Esasky, who himself was slightly below replacement level but still FAR better than Rose at that point.
FUN FACT: Paul O'Neill was 0-for-2 for the Reds that year. Two degrees of separation from Pete Rose to Derek Jeter.
derp
He may have still hit an at average level, but I highly doubt he was fielding at a competent level. Even if he was fielding decently, he was basically later career Sean Casey, hitting ok enough relative to the league but nowhere near good enough to play 1B.
To expand on eto's point, from 1980-86, Rose played almost 900 games, with nearly 3700 PAs, and amassed a solid -2.5 rWAR. Jeter has never had a negative rWAR season (other than in 15 games in 95), but when he does, the Yankees should give him an extra 5 years after that to play 1B and manage.

I find it hard to believe none of you have started talking about the Melky Cabrera fraud issue.
