The reason that Warren Buffet's secretary pays a higher effective tax rate than he does is because of things like capital gains, which are taxed at a different rate than normal income and which is where these rich people make most of their money.

So, let's see how this works. You and I make $100,000 this year and pay 28% of that in taxes. That gives each of us $72,000 to live on for the year. You spend all of your $72,000 on the good life (sex and Rock n Roll). I only spend 50,000 on such things and save the other $22,000. Nope, I don't save it ... I invest it in APPLE stock and one year and a day later I sell it and make $2200 in Profit. Why the heck do I have to pay the GOVERNMENT again any TAX on that money??? You are not going to pay the GOVERNMENT any more ARE YOU??? ... We both EARNED the SAME AMOUNT $100,000 from our jobs and paid our FAIR SHARE. Yet you want me to pay MORE than you because I was SMARTER then you and didn't spend all my money on sex and Rock n Roll.

Because it's income. If I used $22,000 of my $72,000 to buy a product and resell it, I'd have to pay taxes on the income generated, would I not (and that's actually doing work myself, rather than just giving my money to someone else and waiting to turn a profit)? Using money to make money shouldn't exempt you from paying taxes on income. The poor and middle class don't have the luxury of doing so and shouldn't be forced to subsidize the rich because the rich are able to.

I have 7 different investment funds right now - IRAs, 401ks, and pure stock accounts. If you think making money for mouse clicks and paper shuffling (and research, of course) should somehow be exempt from taxes - let alone not taxed higher than actual, contributing-to-GDP labor - then you're an idiot.

The system is setup so that the rich can get richer, easily, and I'm seeing it in my own life. Others are forced to rent, can't afford a home, and I can have several...and then profit off their rent, and take tax deductions for all kinds of stupid things related to that process. This system makes it possible for people to sit on their ass and literally just own ****, and get a free ride. No work, no effort - maybe a momentary glimmer of wisdom to capitalize on something, or maybe just inherit something from a rich daddy (or a long line of rich daddies).

That's your true welfare class, Pete. That's who the common, working man is paying for - the jerk with the yacht that's never worked a day in his life, but owns buildings daddy passed down. But that's your conservative hero, your 'job creator' that wants to make sure his taxes are minimized and that everyone else gets screwed as much as possible to make it happen.

Thats why conservatives would never win in a better system - when the voter turnout is 15-25% of the eligible populace, then they can win. That's it.
