It's a comedic sketch, but the notion of restricting bullet access is absolutely something that needs to be looked into. James Holmes had something like 6,000 rounds of ammunition which he legally bought. There's few reasons for one person to own that much firepower.
How do you suggest doing that? Limit how much someone can buy at one time(which alot of places already do)? That doesn't work cause there are lots of different places to buy ammo, you can just return to the store once a week or whatever and stockpile ammo, etc, etc. Basically it is impossible. Unless you want to take away the rights of the private sector to sell ammo & have just one government run store sell it, so they can track everyone who buys it. I hope that is not your suggestion.
theres no reason to limit the amount of bullets one has. restricting access to whom can buy them? i can see discussion on that. if you don't have a pistol permit, than i have no problem with restricting you from buying ammo. if you want to buy daddy some ammo, get him a gift certificate. but if a licensed citizen has a permit, i don't care how many rounds they want to buy and have and the govt. has no right to put any restrictions on it.
I can't buy more than one box of Claritin-D over a two to four week period, or whatever it is, but it's impossible to limit how many bullets one person can buy? Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... No.
Yes, it's impossible to prevent one person from stockpiling a ton of ammo over a long period of time, but that's not a reason to forego all restrictions.
Did I suggest anything remotely close to that? No, so, clearly, that's not my suggestion.
Yes, there is. You may not agree with them, but there are valid reasons to regulate how much ammunition a single person can purchase. For example, limiting one's ability to shoot and kill people en masse.
No right to put any restrictions on it? So, the government has the right to restrict how much allergy medicine I can buy, because it contains an ingredient for methamphetamine production, but not the right to restrict how much ammunition I can buy? Again, you may not agree, but the government absolutely has the right.
Well firstly I think the limits on allergy/cold medicine is ********. Secondly you can only buy one box from 1 store. NOTHING is stoping you from going to multiple drug stores(which there is one every block now it seems) and buying more. Yes I know that you fill out some paper work and EVENTUALLY they would figure it out, but if we put it in context of bulletts and mass murder by the time they figured it out it would probably be too late. Thirdly your example is bad because there is prolly not any good reason to stockpile allergy medicine. Bullets there is however. I am an avid hunter and belong to a gun club. I spend alot of time at the range. I shoot at least 300 rounds from my various guns a week. During deer season I will shoot even more sometimes. So are you saying me as a law abiding, tax paying citizen should not be allowed to do this? And really what is the difference between having 500 bullets and 6,000? If you're deranged and planning a mass shooting it doesn't matter. 1 box is enough to accomplish that.
I haven't tried buying from multiple drug stores, but given that they scan my driver's license, I'd assume that there's a reasonable likelihood that I can't actually go store to store buying a box at a time in a short period (although, like I said, I don't know for sure).
That's not a reason to fail to regulate ammunition.
My example was to show that it is possible to restrict the quantity of something that people can purchase.
Is it not possible to set up some system where either you purchase ammunition at the gun range or purchase ammunition at a store with the stated intent to use it at a gun range and track attendance and ammunition usage at gun ranges? I don't have a solution. I just think it's something that should be looked into.
No. I'm saying that there should be a discussion about the regulation of ammunition purchases.
Thank you for illustrating my point that having 6,000 rounds of ammunition is completely unnecessary.
I have just read that the first man shot in the temple incident was armed with a knife and actually managed to stab the shooter before he was shot and killed. I must say is there any weapon more useless than a knife?? If you don't believe in carrying a gun, then please carry pepperspray! It is non-lethal, inexpensive and highly effective at close range. 100x more effective than a knife.
All Sikhs carry a kirpan which is probably the knife you speak of. It's not really meant for defending yourself, it's just a religious piece that they always have to wear.
